Dr. William C. "Nick" Nicholas

Dr. William C. "Nick" Nicholas, D.D.S., age 60, of Knottsville Community, Grafton, passed away Wednesday (March 18, 2009) at his residence.He was born on May 19, 1948 in Ft. Benning, Ga., a son of Lucy (Bransford) Nicholas of Arlington, Va., and the late John Francis Nicholas Jr.He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Jane (Scharschu) Nicholas; one son, Michael B. Garvin; one brother, John Francis Nicholas III and wife Loretta of Centreville, Va.; one sister, Susan Elaine Nicholas of Virginia; also six nephews and one niece.He graduated from Wakefield High School in Arlington, Va., of the class of 1966, graduated from the WVU School of Dentistry in 1974, was a Major in the U.S. Army Medic Dental Command serving three years in Italy and Korea.He started his dental practice in Grafton in 1979, served as Memorial Day Parade chairperson for 20 years, and a member of the WVU Athletic Club.He received the Distinguished West Virginian Award for service to the WV Memorial Day Committee awarded May 30, 1999 by Gov. Cecil Underwood. He was a licensed pyrotechnician and was in charge of the fireworks in Taylor County on Sevier Hill, downtown Grafton, and the Taylor County Fairgrounds. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Grafton, the Marion County Dental Association, the 38th Parallel Dental Society of Korea, the American Orthodontic Society, and belonged to the Fraternity Phi Sigma Omega Chapter at WVU.He will be sadly missed by his wife, son, mother, brother, sister and numerous friends.The family will receive friends at the Donald G. Ford Funeral Home in Grafton on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday from noon to 9 p.m. and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday.Funeral services will be held on Saturday at the funeral home at 11 a.m. with Pastor Orville Wright officiating. Interment will follow at the WV National Cemetery in Pruntytown.
