William Penney Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 5 to Nov. 8, 2020.
William E. (Bill) Penney, Jr., was born in Huntsville, Alabama on April 15, 1947 to Geraldine Bennett Penney and William Penney, Sr. He was the oldest of three children. Bill left this earth for his heavenly home on November 4, 2020, following a lengthy illness. Bill graduated in 1965 from S.R. Butler High School, then attended Samford University majoring in Business and received his BS degree in 1969. While there, he was inducted into Alpha Kappa Psi honor fraternity. He then joined his father, William Penney, Sr., at Bill Penney Motors Oldsmobile-Toyota. Bill served in the National Guard Army Chaplain Corp. for two years. In 1975, he became the dealer/owner of Eager Beaver Toyota-Pontiac-Buick-GMC for over 15 years in Scottsboro, Alabama where he was active in Jaycees as president, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, serving as Deacon. His residence was at Bill Penney Ranch on Moores Mill Road in Huntsville, Alabama for the past 30 years. Bill's hobbies included flying as an IFR rated pilot, scuba diving, and sky diving, but most importantly, his Christian activities as a 10 year leader for North Alabama March for Jesus and as a volunteer with the Edwin L. Hodges Worldwide Ministry of Decatur, as well as a volunteer Alabama Prison Evangelist. Bill is survived by his brother Jerre F. Penney (Jean) and his three sons by marriage to Anne Johnson Penney: Jon Barrett Penney (Kelin) of Montgomery, William J. Penney (Tiana) of Scottsboro, and Jordan Bennett Penney (Ashley Nicole) of Atlanta, GA. Also, grandsons, Taylor Barrett Penney, Owen Thomas Penney, and Jon Paxton Penney and granddaughter Isabella Grace Penney, and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, William E. Penney, Sr, his mother Geraldine Bennett Penney, and his sister, Judith Annette Penney. A private Memorial Service for family will be held with burial at Maple Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, family requests memorial donations be made to the Edwin L. Hodges Ministry of Decatur for purchase of Bibles for Worldwide Christian Ministry.

Bill and I go back to our junior high school. Through all those many years he has been a friend that you could count on and a person with a big heart. Loved his laugh and smile, and he laughed often, as we all should. I will miss you old friend and do tell your wonderful tales to those you meet in heaven.

While a student at Butler High School (‘63-‘66) I got to know the Penney family quite well. It saddens me to realize that only one member of that family is still living. While I have good memories of Bill Jr. and Jere as well, their sister Judy was a very special friend that I shall always remember...Jere, my best to you. Don Cox

I did not know Bill very well. I knew his wife Sara Rushbrook Morgan Penney. One of the finest, kindest, most loyal friends a person could ever hope to have. I had known Sara for 51 years. Bill was most fortunate to have had her love him and take care of him during his illness. Sara passed away this past June 2020 following heart surgery. She will forever be missed by many many friends and family.

Bill was a good friend for 65+ years. We started to school in first grade in 1953 @ Monrovia and graduated together in 1965 from S R Butler High School. Bill was a outstanding athlete & President of our Senior class. He was always a leader in arranging for our class reunions. He had a wonderful spirit and will be greatly missed. May God Bless all of his family during this time of loss. Rest In Peace dear friend.

So sorry to hear of Bill’s passing. He was a sweet man and friend. He and I were in Sanford University at the same time and he helped me with a couple of projects for my sorority.

Sorry to lose another Christian brother. We became personal friends about 15 years ago and shared the same first and last name. To the family, prayers for the Peace that passes all understanding. Till we meet again my Brother.

My thoughts and prayers are with his sons and family. Maybe they remember me babysitting. May the Lord strengthen you with each passing day. Bill was a good, long time Christian friend and we enjoyed many of the same things. I'll miss him.

Bill was my first love in middle school, and it lasted all the way through high school. He was always the one to make sure that all of our reunions took place, and it was so good to see him at each one. A sweeter soul you will never find. Rest in Peace, my dear Friend.
