William Pettengill Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 1, 2015.
SEDGWICK - William "Bill" Pettengill, educator extraordinaire, avid Philadelphia & GSA sports fan, political junkie, history buff, music connoisseur, clothing aficionado, loving husband and fantastic father passed on to heaven Thursday, June 25th, 2015.

Bill joined the US Navy after graduating from GSA, serving from 1958 to 1962. Bill worked his way through college, attending the University of Maine at Machias and University of Maine at Orono achieving a Masters Degree in Educational Administration. As an elementary school teacher and principal, Bill aka "Mr. P", was an ardent advocate for the students. Educating children was a lifelong passion with many of his students remembering his caring and dedication. He coached Little League and school teams, often without compensation so the kids could have the opportunity to play. Everybody had playing time when Dad was the coach.

Bill was a one woman man. He met the love of his life at GSA and married her, Joan Douglass Pettengill, in 1962. They continued to love, argue, and dance with each for the next 53 years.

He was crazy for Philadelphia sports teams, the original Philly fanatic. He loved music, attending many concerts with his children.

He leaves behind daughter, Kate Sullivan and husband Mark of Wolfeboro, NH; Mike Pettengill & Miles Morris of Winthrop, ME; grandchildren, Ethan & Ellie Sullivan whom he adored. He also leaves sisters, Lorraine Dolley of Falmouth, Betty Dill of Gray, Sheila Varnum & husband Don of East Holden; brother, Rodney Pettengill and wife Rania of Sibley, MO as well as many sisters and brothers in-law, nieces, nephews, and countless friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Lester & Maidene Pettengill; sister, Josephine Gold; brother, Galen Carter and step-mother Grace Pettengill.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, July 11th at the Blue Hill Baptist Church, Pleasant St., Blue Hill

Joan, So sorry to read about Bill. David and I have fond memories of him (and you!). Our short six year stay in Blue Hill, having left 30 yrs. ago, did not have us forget the great folks we came to know, and Bill and David surely did have a lot of laughs. Will never forget his comment, when he was in No. Maine, that it was odd there were no Carvers, Woodwards, or Alleys in that area. And he could not imagine the many French names he came to know existing in Downeast Maine. What a sense of humor he had! We loved him for it! Loved his happy nature and smile. We think of you and your family as you mourn his loss, and our hearts go out to you.
