William Shreve Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 21, 2022.
William "Bill" Harold Shreve was born in Los Angeles, CA on May 28, 1963 and passed away at the age of 58 in Wailea, Maui, Hawaii, his favorite vacation spot, on May 9, 2022, after a sudden heart attack, with his wife Katie by his side. He was a resident of San Juan Capistrano, CA. He was predeceased by his parents, Merle and Philip Shreve, of Costa Mesa, CA. Bill is survived by his loving wife, Katie, his son, Donovan, his daughter, Kendra, his sister Julia Bates (Bob) of Whidbey Island, WA, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. Bill was the first child of his parents, who had waited years to build their family and with great joy adopted their beautiful son. They soon added a daughter, Julia, who Bill picked out with great enthusiasm, and their family was complete. Bill, a curious happy child, loved to laugh, play and dote on his little sister. Childhood was filled with riding bikes, playing with all the kids on the block, and family vacations, which were always celebrated. Even as a young boy, Bill would set goals and focus all of his effort to achieve them, even building a complicated two-story brick fort. Bill graduated from Costa Mesa High School in 1981, where he swam and played water polo. He achieved a BS degree in 1985 in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Irvine, where he developed a robotic arm and was a proud member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He then worked as an engineer at Teledyne Relays in Hawthorne, CA for two years before deciding to go to law school to become a Patent Attorney. He graduated with a Juris Doctor degree with honors from The George Washington University Law School in Washington, DC in 1990. Bill spent his entire legal career with Knobbe, Martens intellectual property law firm in Orange County, CA, where he served on many committees. He joined the firm as a Summer Associate in 1988, as a full-time Associate after graduating in 1990, and became a Partner in the firm in 1995. Many of Bill's colleagues, and clients had the opportunity to work closely with him and know firsthand what an exceptional person and brilliant lawyer he was. Bill was involved with three separate professional networking groups. He was a member of the SOC (South Orange County) group in ProVisors for 12 years and served on SOC's Executive Committee (EC) for the last 6 years. Bill and his college sweetheart, Katie (McCormick), were married in 1989. He was so proud of their two children, Donovan and Kendra. Being a dad was one of his greatest joys, especially watching the kids grow up and achieve their dreams of graduating college. He loved music, and always wanted to play piano, which he later studied and enjoyed as an adult. Bill had many interests and hobbies, including woodworking in his workshop at home and watching any woodcraft videos online. He also built some of the carpentry finishes in his own dream home. He loved traveling in the United States, especially to Hawaii, to Yosemite last summer, and in Europe, Fiji, and Bora Bora for special anniversary trips, and loved snorkeling in tropical paradises. He enjoyed collecting fine wines and sharing them with friends and his Wine Disciples group. Bill was a big sports fan, often setting a 4:30 am alarm clock to watch the Manchester City soccer club play in England. He cheered for Angels baseball and attended game seven of the 2002 World Series when they captured the championship. He was in Anaheim Ducks hockey season ticket groups since the inaugural year of 1993, and he celebrated when they won the Stanley Cup in 2007. Bill was the proudest when he attended Donovan and Kendra's sporting events, scouting, and National Charity League events. He liked to golf, occasionally, at Marbella Country Club, where he was a member for many years. In the last four years, he was committed to working out with his trainer three times per week at Stark gym and enjoyed long walks with Katie at the harbor or overlooking the ocean. He was involved in his community and generously supported various charities. He served on the Advisory Board for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley since 2013 and on his neighborhood's Architectural Committee for the last six years. Bill was loved by everyone who knew him and had lots of incredibly devoted friends from high school, college, his career, and throughout his life. Everyone will miss him tremendously, but he leaves us with a legacy of love, kindness, and gratitude for having known him. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Bill's memory to Boys & Girls Clubs of Capistrano Valley or Second Harvest Food Bank: https://bgccapo.com/scholarship or https://www.yourfooddrive.org/drive.php?shreve
