William Spizman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 22, 2025.
William David Spizman, 70, passed away suddenly on September 19, 2025.

He was a devoted son of the late Alfred and Barbara Cohen Spizman, a loving and steadfast husband of Heidi Spizman, and the adored father of Teddy Maguire, Lauren Spizman, and Jocelyn Spizman. Bill will also be profoundly missed by his brother Robert (Paula) Spizman, brother-in-law Alan Goodman, aunt Marilyn (Marvin, of blessed memory) Seiger and many nieces and nephews.

Bill spent his childhood and early adulthood in Des Moines, Iowa, working at his family's local grocery store chain, Spizman Food Market ("Where we never compromise on quality") side-by-side with his brother Bob. From an early age, Bill was manning the cash register and interacting with patrons. It was there he built his lifelong interest in business and community-building, as well as his disciplined work ethic.

Bill came from a tight-knit family and had a close relationship with his brother. Bill and Bob were not just roommates (until age 30) but lifelong best friends.

Bill went on to study accounting at Drake University, applying his CPA at Coopers & Lybrand in Des Moines before taking an offer in Chicago in 1988.

He met his wife Heidi at an Israel Bonds Super Bowl party in 1994. Heidi noticed Bill for his height, but she quickly fell in love with his steadiness, maturity, and kind heart. He was proud of his Des Moines roots and even more proud of his three children and soon to be son-in-law Daniel Meek. He was charismatic, dedicated to his family, and had an impeccable memory.

Family, friends, clients, and colleagues counted on Bill's level-headed and honest advice, integrity, and tenacity to tackle even the most challenging problems.

Friends will remember Bill for his insatiable love of community. Of the many communities he touched-East Bank, Green Acres, Northmoor, Mirasol-Bill always enjoyed meeting new people and making connections with friends who dubbed him the "tallest Jew in Chicago."

Bill was hard-working and competitive, especially on the golf course. After nearly drowning as a child, rescued by his brother, Bill challenged himself to learn to swim in his 60s and continued swimming hundreds of meters almost every day.

In his nearly 50 year-long career, Bill found genuine joy in solving problems for clients as a Partner at Coopers & Lybrand, AM&G, and RSM. You could rely on Bill for anything and everything.

Bill capped off 20 years of service to the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois' Middle Market Open annual golf tournament as its Chairman, along with serving on the boards of Mount Sinai Hospital and Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital.

Bill's memory will be a blessing. His celebration of life will be on Thursday, September 25, 2025, 1PM Central Time at Am Shalom, 840 Vernon Avenue, Glencoe, IL 60022. Interment Shalom Memorial Park, 1700 W. Rand Road, Arlington Heights, IL 60004. Shiva Northmoor Country Club, 7PM-9:30PM Central Time, 820 Edgewood Road, Highland Park, IL 60035. Bill became an instant friend from the day we met in our apartment building and he saw me stare at his height wondering if he was a pro ball player and he said something about the air being the same up there.
We had many great times and I always enjoyed his family´s visits for more than just the great food they brought. I am in shock reading about his passing. We just saw each other at Ravinia in August and he promised to look me up in Florida this winter.
My condolences to his family; Bill was a truly wonderful man who lives on in all the memories he provided.

Bill & I have been been friends since we both lived in our hometown of Des Moines, Iowa back in the 1980s.

We enjoyed many good visits, an occasional game of basketball, & I even introduced him to golf.

Bill was always in a positive mood. He was bright, wise, hard-working, & warm-spirited. We'd always try to get together when I was visiting Chicago.

Bill was a great guy who lived a life well-lived. I'll miss him.

To the Spizeman family, I am so sorry for your loss. I knew Bill from East Bank as I am a swimmer there. I always admired his determination to learn to swim. He was always so friendly and nice to me and we had nice conversations throughout the years. May his memory be a blessing.

Bill was a good friend for over 40 years and was in my wedding party. We shared many fun times together, and he truly was the definition of a mensch.

I had the privilege of introducing Bill to the game of golf, and over the years we enjoyed countless rounds together-including his very last, just a couple of days before he passed.

Bill will be deeply missed. May his memory be a blessing.

I have worked side by side with Bill's dentist, as his assistant, for nearly 15 years, and have known him for that entire time. This is a shocking loss and Bill will be missed. He was a wonderful man.
