William Stone Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 22, 2025.
Cohasset - October 1, 1940 – February 21, 2025

William (Bill) Granger Stone died peacefully on February 21, 2025. The eldest of four children, Bill was born, raised, and built his life in Cohasset-a true native and proud of it. At 15, Bill began lobstering out of Cohasset Harbor with his father, Henry. After graduating high school in 1958, this hobby became his vocation for the next 50 years. Known for his calm strength, dry wit, engineering mind, and boundless curiosity, Bill could fix – and build – just about anything. Have a lamp on the fritz? Bring it to Bill. Have an outboard that won't start? Bill couldn't wait to get his hands on it. Carpentry came naturally to him: he rebuilt his lobster boat three times and built his home of 55 years. Bill was a voracious reader and enjoyed applying the knowledge he gained to help people. His thirst for knowledge often led him-and his lucky passengers-on spontaneous road trips throughout New England.

A true introvert, Bill's quiet world was forever changed in 1966 when he met a fiery, French-Canadian beauty named Huguette. The two married six months later and spent 52 years building a life together until Huguette's passing in February, 2019.

Bill's hobbies were as varied as his interests, including antique engine restoration, gardening, beekeeping, and cider making – to list only a few. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and took immense pride in their accomplishments.

Bill is survived by his three children and their families: Michelle Stone Noonan of Marshfield (Kerry Noonan), Chantal Stone Keleher of Kingston (Paul Keleher), and Jeffrey William Stone of Cohasset; as well as his five beloved grandchildren, Grace Noonan, Joe Noonan, Will Keleher, Olivia Stone, and Ben Stone. He also is survived by his sister Ida Baddeley and her husband Mark of New Hampshire, brother David Stone of Florida, and his many Lovell cousins throughout the country.

In keeping with Bill's humble nature, burial will be private.
