Obituary of William Whipple

William Roy Whipple died at 78 on March 27, of complications of a rare congenital disorder, occult spinal dysraphia ("tethered cord"), which gradually made him totally paraplegic. He had adapted bravely to its encroachments, driving with special hand controls until four years ago and living independently until last year.

Bill grew up in Binghamton, New York, with parents Thornton Wilson Whipple and Olive Hancock Whipple. He attended Swarthmore College and followed favorite professors to graduate schools in psychology at U. Penn, Harvard, and University of California, San Diego, getting his Ph.D. from UCSD. He made a career of establishing honors colleges in broad-spectrum universities-enriched programs for superior students. He ran these at State University of New York, Oswego, University of Maine, Orono, and University of Arkansas Little Rock, before becoming associate academic dean of Albright College in Reading, PA. He co-wrote a definitive book, Evaluating Honors Programs (National Collegiate Honors Council, 1990). In 1994 he was made dean of students at Bethany College in West Virginia, but in 2000 developed near-fatal liver failure as an unrecognized side-effect of a medication. When he recovered he left academia to pursue a less pressured career as a graphic designer, from which he never entirely retired.

He volunteered in many eclectic projects, in particular as stage sound designer for the Players Club of Swarthmore and other theaters, including Hedgerow Theater in Media, PA, and Synetic Theater in Washington, DC. He co-edited a collection of reminiscences about the TV show What's My Line, collected and edited a montage of orchestra conductors' techniques, and wrote and edited a wide variety of Wikipedia articles. Subjects of these included the prominent Gestalt psychologist Hans Wallach, for whom he was scientific executor; the cooking author Irma S. Rombauer; behavioral economics; and the Guarneri Quartet, among others. His friends especially welcomed the surprising mixed CDs of Christmas music that he selected, edited, and sent out every fall until 2022. He said he "got a great deal of spiritual enrichment through music."

Bill's gracious good nature made everyone he encountered feel warm toward him, and recruited support among his caretakers in his final months. He is survived by his younger brothers Robert Whipple of Hilton, NY and Frederick Whipple of Anaheim, CA, and ex-wife Katherine Ann Kennedy Whipple of Washington, DC. Memorial services will be private. In his will he asked that contributions in his memory be made to the Players Club of Swarthmore, Box 236, Swarthmore, PA 19081.

I met Bill when I was a student at the University of Maine more than 30 years ago, and he was teaching psychology and directing the Honors College. He offered me enrichment activities and encouraged my academic pursuits, which led me to undertaking a PhD at Stanford. His mentoring and role modelling was life-changing, as it must have been for countless other students he supported in his role as an educator. But unlike most others students he taught, we became dear friends. We spent several Thanksgivings together, first in California and later in Ithaca, New York. Seeing my need of help in the kitchen (he teased me about my stuffing), he gave me a copy of The Joy of Cooking that is still my "go-to" resource in the kitchen, even with the internet at my fingertips. Just as he had encouraged me to spread my wings, I encouraged him to try things that were outside his comfort zone. Although I moved overseas 14 years ago, we maintained email correspondence and the occasional phone call. His Christmas music collections and amusing, thoughtful letters were a highlight of every Christmas. He was one of the truest friends I've known. I miss him. I am happy to see familiar names in the memories here even if I have not met you. I know he loved and was loved by so many who were lucky enough to have been his friend. To Bill: One last thank you. May you rest in peace. Kathleen M Quinlan

I was a year ahead of Bill at Swarthmore. We both had interests in photography, radio, and sound recording, so found ourselves together in a group of what might have been called geeks if that name had been invented then (I don´t think it was). We kept in touch after College, notes, then email, and, after he settled in the Swarthmore area, a meal at Swarthmore Pizza whenever I passed through, traveling for work or Class reunions. I guess I won´t be getting a reply to the email I sent him on May 27th. Sigh!

I knew Bill for over 50 years. He had a talent for friendship, maintaining a correspondence with people all over the world on a wild variety of subjects. I loved writing to him and getting back one of his funny, thoughtful, unexpected and memorable letters. I will miss him a great deal, and so will many others. My sympathies to his family and to his extended family of friends.

Bill was my classmate at Swarthmore and a lifelong friend. I am so glad that I knew him and that we kept in touch over the years. The last time I saw him was at the 50th reunion of the class of 1966. He was in a wheelchair but he was the same old optimistic, cheerful guy that I had known.

My deepest sympathy to Bill´s family. I got to know Bill when I worked at Applebees. We shared a love of music that resulted in many email conversations about famous conductors and singers! I treasure the wealth of knowledge he shared with me.
