I met Bill when I was a student at the University of Maine more than 30 years ago, and he was teaching psychology and directing the Honors College. He offered me enrichment activities and encouraged my academic pursuits, which led me to undertaking a PhD at Stanford. His mentoring and role modelling was life-changing, as it must have been for countless other students he supported in his role as an educator. But unlike most others students he taught, we became dear friends. We spent several Thanksgivings together, first in California and later in Ithaca, New York. Seeing my need of help in the kitchen (he teased me about my stuffing), he gave me a copy of The Joy of Cooking that is still my "go-to" resource in the kitchen, even with the internet at my fingertips. Just as he had encouraged me to spread my wings, I encouraged him to try things that were outside his comfort zone. Although I moved overseas 14 years ago, we maintained email correspondence and the occasional phone call. His Christmas music collections and amusing, thoughtful letters were a highlight of every Christmas. He was one of the truest friends I've known. I miss him. I am happy to see familiar names in the memories here even if I have not met you. I know he loved and was loved by so many who were lucky enough to have been his friend. To Bill: One last thank you. May you rest in peace. Kathleen M Quinlan

I was a year ahead of Bill at Swarthmore. We both had interests in photography, radio, and sound recording, so found ourselves together in a group of what might have been called geeks if that name had been invented then (I don´t think it was). We kept in touch after College, notes, then email, and, after he settled in the Swarthmore area, a meal at Swarthmore Pizza whenever I passed through, traveling for work or Class reunions. I guess I won´t be getting a reply to the email I sent him on May 27th. Sigh!

I knew Bill for over 50 years. He had a talent for friendship, maintaining a correspondence with people all over the world on a wild variety of subjects. I loved writing to him and getting back one of his funny, thoughtful, unexpected and memorable letters. I will miss him a great deal, and so will many others. My sympathies to his family and to his extended family of friends.

Bill was my classmate at Swarthmore and a lifelong friend. I am so glad that I knew him and that we kept in touch over the years. The last time I saw him was at the 50th reunion of the class of 1966. He was in a wheelchair but he was the same old optimistic, cheerful guy that I had known.

My deepest sympathy to Bill´s family. I got to know Bill when I worked at Applebees. We shared a love of music that resulted in many email conversations about famous conductors and singers! I treasure the wealth of knowledge he shared with me.
