William Wishnick Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 23 to Jun. 25, 2010.
William Wishnick was 85 years
old when he peacefully passed
from our presence on May 29,
2010. Bill was a business man,
philanthropist, USA Off-Shore
Powerboat Champion in 1970,
and World Off-Shore Power
Boat Champion in 1971, race
car driver, motorcyclist, adventurer,
lover of humanity, good
humor, kindness, grace, honor,
integrity and hard work.
William Wishnick, retired CEO
and Chairman of the Board of
Witco Corp., was born inNew
York City in 1924. After overseas
duty in the United States
Army, he entered the University
of Texas and graduated in 1949
with a B.BA. He joined Witco
that year in the manufacturing
department of the company's
Pioneer products plant at
Lawrenceville, Illinois.
A year later, Mr. Wishnick was transferred to Perth Amboy,
New Jersey, and placed in charge of Pioneer's manufacturing
operations. In 1951, he was elected vice president and treasurer
of the company, executive vice president in 1955, vice chairman
of the board in 1960, chairman of the board on January 1,
1964, president on October 28, 1971, and CEO and Chairman
of the Board in 1975. He held those positions until his retirement
December 1991; 70 years after his father had begun the
company as Wishnick-Tumpeer Chemical Company.
Wishnick was one of the most dynamic and charismatic CEO's
of his generation. He was highly respected in the business
world as a tough executive with a special feeling for his staff and
prided himself with the fact that he never in the history of the
company had a strike by the employees. He grew up with
Witco, knew everything about it and could reach decisions very
quickly. When he made a decision, he wanted action and was
not interested in elaborate staff procedures. Witco was transformed
from a $20M chemical reseller in 1954 into a $123
million diversified manufacturer 10 years later. Bill, the company's
second chairman, launched a series of acquisitions and
internal expansions that brought sales to $1.5 billion in 1984.
He served on the Board of the Chemical Manufacturers
Association; member of the American Chemical Society; New
York Paint, Varnish and Lacquer Association; the Salesman's
Association of the American Chemical Industry; and the
American Petroleum Institute; Member of the Board of
Trustees of The Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York City,
Sponsor and Trustee of The Mount Sinai School of Medicine;
Fellow and Honorary Doctor of Engineering of Polytechnic,
Trustee of Carnegie Mellon, and President of The Robert I
Wishnick Foundation.
BILL WISHNICK
T H E M A N , T H E M Y T H , T H E L E G E N D
In 1965 on an impulse, Bill
turned his energy toward
Ocean Power Boat racing.
He was in Florida for New
Year's, read about a boat
race and decided to take a
look. He bought the boat
that won the race and began
racing. Five years later, he
captured the American
Power Boat Association
Championship, followed by
the World Championship
in 1971. He raced all over
the world, from Europe to
the Caribbean and in South
America.
Amongst his other interests
of motorcycle riding, car
racing, he loved helping
others to achieve their
dreams. Besides putting his
own children through
college, he put the two
daughters of friends Mabel & John Lam and the son of Joe
Maffie through college as well.
Bill was an extremely charitable person and served on many
boards. He was proudest of the over 40 years he served as
Trustee of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and was
very active for many years in sponsoring and fund raising
for Jewish causes and for the State of Israel, as well as
American Friends of the Hebrew University where his
mother Freda Wishnick had a dormitory built. Many years
later when her great-grandson Max Leeds joined the Israeli
Army, he got to sleep in the Freda Wishnick Building.
This barely begins to describe the marvelous man that Bill
Wishnick was, nor does it begin to describe the length of
his passions and his loves. His family meant everything to
him. It is with love that he departed his wife, Lisa Fluet
Wishnick, his precious daughters Ami Jo Gibson, Gina
Grossman and Kendall Wishnick Adams; he leaves two sonin-
laws Ron Gibson and Matt Adams. He adored and
enjoyed the company of his grandchildren Emmett and
Oscar Adams, Jenna and Max Leeds, Zack and Zoey
Grossman and many, many friends. His brother John
Wishnick and his wife Phyllis and seven nieces and nephews
survive him. Bill joins the company of his dearly departed
daughter Elizabeth, his parents Robert I. Wishnick and
Freda (Frankel) Wishnick and, most recently, his beloved
sister Betty Freeman of Los Angeles.
Rest in peace dearest husband, father, grandfather,
brother, uncle, friend and greatest mentor and
supporter of so, so many…you will be sorely missed.

Hi, I'm sorry for writing this so late, but I just came across Mr. Wishnick's name and thought that it's never too late to write something nice about someone that was such a positive role model for me. I worked in the mail room for Witco Chemical back in 1966, I was only 17 . I met Mr. Wishnick as he always came work through the mail room every morning to get his mail. He always greeted me with a big hello, and would always ask something about my life. I was very impressed at the way he treated us all. I'm now 71 and think about the people who left me with such great memories. He was definitely one of those people. I hope you are in a good place Mr. Wishnick!

Bill kindly helped me (an unknown, at that time, visiting cousin from Palo Alto, California) score several last minute tickets to hard-to-get Broadway shows. This was in the late 1960's after I had just gotten out of college, and at the advice of my mother Dorothy Wishnick Kremen (1st cousin, daughter of Max Wishnick {brother of Robert}), who suggested I get in touch with Bill. Though he was busy, he most hospitably made time for me in his office and at his home. (Bill's brother John squired me around in his new Plymouth Barracuda!) My long "hippie" hair and beard at the time inspired his wife to take me to Frank Sinatra's alleged barber in Manhattan to cleanup--an offer I couldn't, out of celebrity curiosity, refuse. I didn't know it previously, but my mother and her identical twin sister, Ethel Wishnick Johnson, had both been inspired to become Organic Chemists by Bill and his dad, Uncle Bob, graduating as the first two females in that field from the University of Minnesota in the 1930's. I was fascinated by Bill's ability to simultaneously be at the helm of a major Fortune 500 business and world class boat racing team. Though I returned to a life in San Francisco, I tried to follow Bill and his new achievements from a distance, and always considered him a multi-faceted role model.

Oh Dad...... It sucks not having you around. I saved all your favorite shirts and pants and put them in your blue Reebok travel bag you've had for like 30 years...... I can open it up and the clothes still smell like you! SOmetimes I spray Tova but that smells WAY TOO much like you and usually makes me cry. I think the necklace mom gave us with a little piece of you in them might have mystical powers cause every time I wear it...... something incredible happens.....
It's Thanksgiving this weekend... the one time of the year you with out a doubt would come visit! I swear I'll get Stove top just for you, instead of making stuffing from scratch....
Well, maybe we'll do both just so we can still laugh about the bets we used to make about whose stuffing was better!

Now that you're gone I feel like there is a piece of me missing! Emmett always talks about his grandpa! :( OScar calls you Emmett's grandpa cause he was too young to really remember.... KInd of funny and sad all at the same time!
Well Dad.. we keep on plugging away at life... Hopefully I'll live till I'm old, and I will miss you all my days. I'm so glad we got to spend so much time together in Pt. PLeasant when I was a teen and into college... We hung out a lot during that time, smoking cigs.. "A family that smokes together stays together!" you used to say as a joke. OY VEY only you! well I'm glad we quit bonding over cigs but what ever.... You used to come in my room and have a cig with my in high school since that was the only place we could smoke in the house, and we shared a lot of words during that time! I'll always think of that as our special time funny enough!
Well.... I'll miss you this Thanksgiving...... My stuffings still better!!!!!!!!!!! xoxoxox

Bill, your birthday was here this weekend and all the Elders were here from the Navajo Reservation. They all hugged me for their love and memory of you. I tried to be you at the auction, but did not have your style or flair. However, I think the program was happy for having a "semblance" of you. The girls missed you and we all shared our melancholy over memories and missing you. You were strong in our hearts and love. We also knew that if you were here we would all of been in Vegas or here together having
such fun and laughter, and sharing hugs and kisses. We all miss you so much.

Hi Lisa:
Sorry it took so long for me to write this. I hope all is well with you. Very sad to hear about Bill, he was a wonderful person and I feel privileged to have known him. He was always kind to me but made sure he kept me on my toes. My fondest memory apart from many would be him slapping my wrists every time I went to make a bad move when we played backgammon. It just always makes me chuckle when I think of it.
I hope your doing well. I'm sure your staying as busy as ever with the ranch and all. My parents send their very best to you and I also.
I look forward to seeing you on your next visit.
Until then
Take care

Dear Lisa (and girls),

It is hard to find the words to express my sympathy, condolences, and sadness at Bill's passing. He was a big part of my teenage years, but a much bigger part of your lives for many years. I know how much he loved you all and how much you loved him. He will be missed by family and friends. He was one of a kind.

I hope you are in good health. It was a joy seeing you last summer and I look forward to seeing you in Steamboat for a return visit.

Again, sincere sympathy from all the Biebers. We look forward to staying in touch.

Fondest regards, Natalie

I'll always remember Bill as one of the most down to earth people I'd ever met.

Dear Wishnick Family,
The mark of a great man is the memory he leaves behind.
Bill Wishnick will always be one of the greatest men in my life and my family's. His kindness and generousity were unmatched. You never left Bill without having learned something new or experiencing an adventure that would create the memory to carry a lifetime. He was a "best pal" to my mother & father and a great mentor to my brother & I. His passing marks the completion of another era in my life that will always be rememberd with joy.
My life was greatly enriched for having known Bill.
To each of you, Lisa, Kendall, Gina & Ami, thank you for sharing your husband and dad and may peace be found in the memories that he has left with all of us. It was a gift to have known Bill and a privilege to learn from him. He touched us all differently but with the same enthusiasm that life is meant to be shared and enjoyed. Again, I am so sorry for your loss, but grateful to have experienced the legacy know as Bill Wishnick.
Always and with love,

It's hard for me to sit here and think of what to say about my dad because there are so many memories it would become a epic novel and would send me crying for hours. My father always made sure I felt safe, I was taken care of, and knew he supported my decisions, no matter what they may have been. I always felt how much he loved me no matter what. I have a hole in my heart with the loss of my father, and I have many years left in my life where he will not be able to hold my hand, or hear my problems or tell me he loves me. I was very lucky to spend 34 years with him, and even luckier he got to met my children and be secure that I am happy with my husband and my life in Idaho.
He was one of the kindest men I have and will ever meet! He worked hard his whole life and still managed to have time to play hard, and live life to the fullest. What a great role model to have. He was so witty, and smart, growing up in the Wishnick house was anything but dull. I remember once when I was 5 he came home from a business trip and wrote "I LOVE YOU" in juicy fruit gum on my floor... or the time he carried my doll house all the way home that by the time he got there, his knuckles were bloody! Now thats devotion!
My father my be gone but he has left me with and amazing example of how to live, and be proud everyday with my accomplishments and decisions. I can only hope to do the same for my children.
William Wishnick spent everyday helping at least one person. We would go to a restaurant and instead of leaving a tip, he would pay for the waitress to get tattooed. Everyone loved my father! His absence on this planet will be missed by so so many! I am so glad he touched all of you the way he did. If only there were more people like him on this earth, maybe it wouldn't be so hard for so many.
Thank you dad for 34 years of fun, loving, learning, and hugging. I will miss you everyday, and I will never forget the Wishnick handshake. I only wish I could get squeezed back! I love you forever and I will make sure the boys always remember their amazing Grandpa BIll!

Dear Lisa:

I was so sorry to receive the news of Bill’s passing. Thank you for responding to my newsletter (Huguenot Herald) so quickly.

Bill was the most influential person in our New Rochelle High School Class of 1942 when it came to our four reunions. He allowed many of our less affluent classmates to attend the original one in 1992 at the Wykagyl Country Club by sending us an amount that probably paid half the cost of the event. He also met with the reunion committee and encouraged us on. He was so enthusiastic about our class that he personally sponsored the next two, in 1995; and in 1997, our 55th reunion, at your penthouse on East 56th St., working with Bill Freedman. He always encouraged me to keep writing the annual newsletter to our surviving classmates, now down to about 90 from the original 306. When one suddenly ceases to be published in June it will be because I will have joined Bill.

Thank you for sending me the special obit. It told me far more than I had realized about Bill’s life. God bless you and may you continue to live your life to the fullest in your beautiful home in Utah.

Sincerely,

Karen McCall

Dear Lisa, thanks for Bill's obituary. I never met him but he sounds like a powerhouse of activity, activism and great kindness. Isabel talked about him often and his closeness to you and the kids. She has made her travel arrangements for a quick visit to you and I'll get her to the plane; her memory is seriously impaired and we watch her closely. She still ministers to her faithful flock and offers solutions to all their problems. She's really good at that. She's the best thing that has happened to me in a long time. She'll email you herself as soon as she stops thinking the computer will blow up in her face...Lisa, you don't deserve any sadness in your life and we offer you all the love and comfort we can at this difficult time...George and Isi

Dear Lisa,
My sincerest condolence.s are with you. Bill was such a lovely person! As often happens in these circumstances, I was in Los Angeles only yesterday visiting old friends and Bill's name was brought up and he was remembered fondly for the parties we all enjoyed together. He was a dear man and it was such a pleasure to know him and work with him (and you) even a little bit on very happy occasions. I was in Salt Lake last month and will be again at the end of June to tend to the funeral of my dear friend Jana Blair. Why is it only the most kind, interesting, and generous people go too soon?

Wow--my turn to write. I've been thinking about my Dad, who I fondly called "Papa" or sometimes "Poopsie". Sooooooo many memories of my childhood involve him. Many GREAT and amazing adventures I would NEVER had if not for Lisa and him.

First, Lisa has been a wonderful step-mother. She never stood in the way of my Dad visiting or spending time with me (or Ginny/Kendall.) She was very generous with sharing him. She brought him love like no other and in his final days, all he wanted was "Leeeeeeeeeeesa!!"--He only wanted her to give him his food (whatever little he ate) and wanted always to know she was nearby. He loved his life with her and she was the one who made his life happy and complete. Thank you Lisa for everything you did for him and continue to do to make my memories happy ones.

Second,Poopsie made childhood fun. He gave me the Bloomingdale's charge card for the day, telling me to get whatever I wanted. The store opened at 9:00am and closed (at that time ) at 6:00pm--so go have fun. A DREAM for a high school girl. Only problem...I bought socks and underwear--who knew I should have gone to the jewelry department!HAHAHAHA!

He took us to the Jersey Shore for vacations and summer time and we went to car races and had a beautiful house on the beach. He loved to barbecue steaks. Later he and Lisa had an amazing condo where the inlet and ocean meet. Views for forever. And my kids were able to walk to the carnival rides and play games and Poopsie got wristbands that enabled us to go on rides all day, for free. What a dream come true for his grandchildren.

We met amazingly wonderful fun people through him. Florida, Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Tahoe, Monte Carlo, Paris, concerts, SST airplane, MGM Grand airplane, helicopters, limos, Broadway shows, shopping sprees, Bob Bondurant Racing School (that we attended together), catered Thanksgiving dinners at my house almost every year and I didn't have to lift a finger, fancy dinners at places like 21, a birthday party bash almost every year when I was in Los Angeles at the Palm for me and 20 of my closest friends for lobster and steak, and names of places in Europe I have long forgotten, cruises, Colorado River rafting, for giving me 2 (oops!!!) beautiful weddings, arranging trips for the grandkids to get to summer camp via private airplane or he personally drove, our long drive when he left NY for good to go to Utah to Lisa, and the list goes on and on. Just wonderful FUN FUN times.

I am sooooooooooo grateful to have had those memories and those times with him.

I thank you Papa for being the best Poopsie. For Ginny, Kendall and Lisa for me to have as family. You shall always be in my heart and my memories. I love you and hope you have found your heaven in heaven as you did in Utah with Lisa.

With kisses, hugs and much love,
Ami

Lisa,
We are so very saddened to hear about Bill. It seemed like just yesterday that he answered the phone in the house when we called. We have such great memories even though our times together were brief. You know when you meet someone for the 1st time and realize that you just love them immediately?, Well, that is how we felt about you and Bill and your family. Bill always made us feel so welcome. He was a generous loving man full of life and spunk. He added so many memories to our lives..dinners and shows at Caesar's, eating our 1st ever caviar:),
drinking good wine and champagne, riding Harley's with him (john love, love, loved that!!), hearing his racing stories, and just hanging out with him at your house. It was always so comfortable and loving. It was through your trips to Tahoe that we were fortunate to get to know you and Bill, and Kendall, and for that we are sooo blessed. Our love and thoughts go to you and your family. Thank you for all of the wonderful memories! We love you!

Dear Lisa, Kendall, Gina and Amy:

I was saddened to hear of the loss of Bill, especially since he was like another uncle to me. After all, how many times did we all attend some occasion at Jack and Phyllis Wishnick's? Your family was like extended family to me. My Mom even remembers growing up across the street from Bill and his family and going to the movies with him. May your memories of him bring you warmth and peace.

Much love,

Gail Bieber and family

Dear Lisa,

I forwarded the news to my dad the other day and he tried unsuccessfully to call from France (he's getting up there in age too). So he has asked me to drop you a note to let you know how saddened he is to hear this news. Vincenzo considered Bill a great friend as well as a great competitor.

The entire Balestrieri family has you and Bill in our thoughts and our prayers. Our sincerest condolences.

You are in my thoughts......
Hi Lisa,
I just wanted to send you a message to let you know that I am thinking about you, Bill, Kendall, Ami & Gina. I love you & your whole family just like you are my own family. I am sending you a HUGE HUG from Sophie & I. When things were not good in my life, my Dad would call me & say " Spirit Check".... & that was all he would say into the answering machine. He would "spirit check" me when things were difficult & sometimes there is nothing good to say about whatever situation I was dealing with. It was his way of letting me know how much he loved me & how badly he wanted to fix something for me & couldn't. So, I am sending you a spirit check!!!!
Love,
Whipper

Hi Lisa
So sorry for your loss. I have very fond memories of us as children at your apartment in NYC. When I think about your Uncle Bill, it makes me think about my Grandfather, and how much I miss how he was, and how Uncle Bill was. In my mind that's how I think of them. Dear Lisa,
G told me that Bill passed away yesterday, and I wanted to send my deepest condolences to you and Kendall and your grand children. G had told me what an angel you were to not only Bill but also to G and Ami when they were with you this past month.
I'm sure that Bill's last few months have been trying for you, but as G mentioned to me he seemed happy and ready to go. What an incredible life he had! I'm glad to have known him!

I also know what a blessing you both were for each other...and how generous you both have been to me and my family.....Godbless YOU and YOUR family.

I can see Bill now...riding his Harley...his hair and beard blowing in the wind from cloud to cloud all around the Universe!

Much Love....Robin

Lisa,

Linda just called me this morning. She said Bill had been home bound two months and you've been there care taking. I've been thinking all day what to say to you, but I know any words won't cover what a hard thing you've had to do, to care for someone you love and watch them decline, and then they are gone and you have to adjust to another hard thing. I'm just so glad for you that you were able to do it, and so sorry for you to have to go through all this. I hope your family is able to be there with you soon, and in the days ahead I hope you reach out to family and friends. It can be so lonely, but it doesn't have to be.

I'm out of town this week, but when I get back can I drive to your place and can we take a walk and talk? I'd love to see you, not just email you.

Much Love,

Julie Hansma Hinchliff

Dear Lisa,

Please accept my sincerest condolences for the loss of Bill. He was and remains one of my favorite personalities of all time: A true gentleman and a champion of many causes, a loving father and devoted husband. He served God’s will with honor and leaves behind an honest legacy for others to follow. How it must have felt to have been so cherished and adored unequivocally by him throughout your adult life. Knowing you, I am certain he found it more rewarding each and every passing day.

All my love,

Diane

Dear Lisa:

We were shocked and saddened by the news of Bill's death. You and he have always had a special place in our hearts, and our wonderful visit with you brought back our shared past with even greater intensity. Our links as "older parents" made us members of our own club, with our late-arriving daughters as the other members.

We send all of our love to you, and ask you to share our condolences with Kendall & her family, & the other children.
