William Wu Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 20, 2009.
WU, Dr. William T. Dr. William Wu passed away peacefully at the age of 72 on March 17, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer. Dr. Wu is survived by his loving wife Dr. Grace Chen, his brother Lawrence, four children Alex, Andre, Chris and Steven and four grandchildren Michaela, Torin, Briseis and Emmett. Dr. Wu lovingly served the community and practiced pediatrics at the University of Alberta, Royal Alexandra and Sturgeon General Hospitals over the last 30 years. He completed his Pediatrics Residency at the UofA Hospital in 1970, went on for further training at the Children's Hospital Medical Center in Boston, completed a fellowship in Neonatology in 1972 and fulfilled his American Board of Pediatrics in 1977. He attained further training in herbs and acupuncture at the Shanghai Chinese Medical School. He also researched, lectured and wrote about the best of western and eastern medical philosophies. He will always be remembered by his many relatives, colleagues, friends and patients for his kindness, genuine compassion, strong work ethic and openness to sharing his extensive knowledge and wisdom. His joys in life were his family, his studies and his practice. When he relaxed he enjoyed ballroom dancing with his loving wife and listening to his classical music. His Life Philosophy: "I cannot avoid growing old, but I'd never want to grow up as I would like to envision my world through the eyes of a child." A private family gathering will take place at a later date as per his wishes. Condolences : 205 Meadowlark Prof. Building, 8702 Meadowlark Road, Edmonton, T5R 5W5. Surviving Family

May 25, 2009

Through the grief of a loss so overwhelming, at a time when we have received the gift of so many well wishes and words, we are at a loss for expressing how deeply touched our hearts have been. The loving kindness, expression of sympathy, prayers and hundreds of cards and flowers during this difficult time has truly helped to ease our grief and I know that Bill would have been greatly touched. We are forever grateful and our hearts will never forget.

but those who care and
share your loss wish you
comfort and peace of mind.
May you find strength
in the love of family
and in the warm embrace
of friends.

Dr. Grace Chen and Family,

I am profoundly saddened by the passing of Dr. Wu. He was always such a kind-hearted man. He was always so warm, supportive, and cheerful. I wish I could have offered comfort and support to Dr. Wu before his passing, but I did not learn of his illness until it was too late.

Dr. Wu is the inspiration behind a fundraiser I am hosting on April 17th... "An Evening of Glamour & Goodness" -- a Fundraiser for the Alberta Cancer Foundation (www.dine4cure.ca). We hope to raise significant funds to help researchers find a cure for cancer, in memory of Dr. Wu.

Dr. Wu will always be in my thoughts and source of inspiration.

With deepest sympathy,
Stephen Lau & Family

Dr. Grace Chen and Family
I was shocked when I learned today of Dr. Wu's passing. My father taught Steven at Archbishop MacDonald and from him my family was introduced to Dr. Wu who helped my mother and I with many malities and was always so caring, empathetic, and compassionate. He was truly a great man with a plethora of talents. Know that his wisdom and spirit will endure through all those people that he cared for.
God Bless

First of all, I would like to offer my most heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Wu. I was lucky enough to have him as a pediatrician for my sons for the past 6+ years. My oldest son can be shy at times, but always felt comfortable with Dr. Wu, and often referred to him as his "bestest friend - Docker Worm" (eventually he could pronounce his name properly - but this was something Dr. Wu always remembered and enjoyed). This man truly cared for his patients. He listened to my concerns, explained in detail why certain things were important and always had something funny to say! I cried when I learned of his diagnosis, and cried again today upon reading this notice. I will be forever grateful for the time we had with Dr. Wu. I know he is watching all of his "children" from above and I take such comfort in knowing that he is at peace. Dr. Chen and family, you are all in my thoughts and prayers and I know there isn't anything to take away your pain and sadness, but just knowing you have such an amazing guardian angel will hopefully bring you the comfort you need at this time.

To the family and friends of Dr. Wu, I was blessed to first be treated by Dr. Wu at the age of 15. While many others gave up on me through my early childhood illness Dr Wu always believed in me and provided much support and inspiration. I will never forget the Star Trek poster he brought me while I was in the Sturgeon General Hospital and the note he wrote on it, "While my body may be entrapped in pain, my spirit will always remain undaunted and free." He was a man who truly lived an inspirational life and who touched many in his 72 years. He would go the the furthest ends for his patients and I am proud and lucky to have known him. I was never so honored when he first referred to me as being like another son to him. It was a tru pleasure and honor to be a part of his life and practice. He is an inspiration to me and to all those who suffer with chronic pain. His example to me an others in his living with chronic pain was again an inspiration and I will always strive to be as strong and as free as he was. I am truly saddened and lost at his passing and feel as though a large piece of my soul and of my life has been lost. I am comforted by the memory of his sage advice and winning smile and will have nothing but fond and happy memories of him to further strengthen and comfort me. To his family, my deepest and most heatfelt condolences are with you all at this difficult time. May you be comforted by the kind words others leave and the memories they share. Know that he was a great man who deeply impacted and touched my life, my soul and my spirit. I shall truly remain "undaunted and free" when I think of him.

Our Dear Dr. Wu:

We received your email and pictures of March 4th and I must say your little granddaughter, Briseis, looks like such an adorable little creature -she must be such a delight and looks like a real character - what a happy little angel.

We have a couple of pictures with you and Violetta throughout the years and they are among our treasured items, we all grew "older" together. You have truly been a blessing in our lives now for almost 30 years and I am so very grateful to have gone through parenthood with your guidance, assistance and support. Violetta was a delightful child but full of such life & energy - you helped calm me and guided me as needed. I actually kept a medical journal since day one and she tells me it is an enjoyable read as it includes many funny stores and moments we shared.

You taught me to be calm, relax, think first and be strong. It was incredibly comforting to know we had you in our corner, you were always available to us - no matter she was in her 20's and well beyond the normal age a child sees a paediatrician - we just couldn't give you up - you were the best.

It was an absolute joy and honor to have you care for my grandson, Elvis Jr. as well and I thank you. Our new baby will not be as fortunate however I'm sure you are playing with them in your new place with God.

I ask God to take as good care of you as you took of my daughter and grandson. I am so indebted to you for all your kindness and support throughout the many years. It is now time for you to rest and have peace.

We love you and will deeply miss you. God Bless you always our dear dear Dr. Wu.

Our deep condolences to the family at this very difficult time. You are not alone in your grief if that brings you any comfort. He had a huge impact on so many lives - he was a blessing to us all. God Bless you ALL.

Dr. Wu was a close friend to our family and we are deeply saddened by his passing. He was a pediatrician to our 3 girls who are now 30, 28 and 26. We were blessed to also have him look after our granddaughter. Our family will always remember the compassion and caring he provided. He gave selfishly to his practice and continually gave above and beyond. Our family will deeply miss him, but his legacy and his memories will live forever in each of our hearts.

Our deepest condolences and sympathies to Dr. Wu's family and our hearts go out to you in this time of sorrow.

May the peace that comes from love and memories shared, comfort you now and in the days ahead.

My sincere condolences to the family of an amazing pediatrician. I was deeply saddened to see Dr. Wu's obituary in the paper. It felt as if we had lost a family friend. Although my four "children" now range from 34 to 27, for many years our visits were countless. After grandchildren were born, it was exciting to be able to refer them to "the best doctor" I knew! He was a kind, compassionate and caring man, and the animal crackers will be fondly remembered forever.

To Dr. Wu & Family,

On behalf of the Caputo Family, I would like to offer our sincerest condolences to the Wu family. Even though it has been almost 15 years since we had too visit Dr. Wu’s practice, it seems like yesterday when his almost “weekly” expertise, confidence, caring touch and animal cookies made some of the most difficult times of my childhood dissolve away. I do not know where I would be without your early faith today Dr. Wu….Thank you!!!!

Forever in gratitude
