William Zehner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 22, 2025.
William Andrew Zehner - beloved BZ to his big family and many, many friends - died in Palm Springs, California on February 23, 2025. Bill was born January 19, 1956, in Redwood City, California, delivered by Dr. Pepper at Sequoia Hospital.

His parents were Fenton John Zehner (1918-2004) and Eleanor Mary Lauenroth Zehner (1919-1997). Bill was the youngest of their four children, John Fenton Zehner, Sr (1940-2013), Mary Eleanor DiTullio (1944-2024), and Suzanne Elizabeth Hustad (b. 1953).

Bill graduated from Sequoia High School in 1974, from Willamette University in 1978 and from the School of Social Work at Portland State University in 1987.

Bill worked for North Clackamas School District for 25 years, supporting special needs students. An elementary school principal with whom he worked noted that Bill had this knack: a consummate professional, he could connect with the family, lay out the situation in a no-nonsense way, leave them with some hope and a feeling that they had been heard and were understood. In this way, he dissolved the barriers between the family and the services to benefit them. He had a way of seeing the good in people.

Bill married the love of his life, Jacquie (Burns), on her birthday, St. Patrick's Day, in 1990. He said he knew early in their courtship that she was "the" one because she had her own SkilSaw.

Jacquie survives Bill, as does a large family: Burgee the cat, his sister Suzanne, his sisters-in-law Cathy Miller, Taryn Burns (Bill), and Sally Urlin (Allan); his nieces and nephews, Corin (Dan) Heather, Laura (Mike), Jay (Melody), Troy (who predeceased him) (Lori), Jess (Natalie), Zac (Kat), Justin and Jack.

Bill was a man of deep and active love, for planes, cars, boats, projects, his cats, family and his Christian faith. And for friends. In making those, he looked not just what they had in common, but for the special ingredient on which his irrepressible and irreverent humor could thrive. He'd tease, he'd prank, could never quite suppress the telltale sparkle in his eye. He'd do anything for you: build, fix, accompany, teach, comfort, facilitate ... go out of his way.

It is such an immense loss that he is no longer here with us. But because of the way he lived, we will hold him in our hearts forever. Our BZ, sail on, dear friend to so many. Calm seas now, and following winds.

Bill's funeral is Friday, June 27, 2025 at 1pm at Christ The King Catholic Church, 11709 SE Fuller Rd, Milwaukie, OR 97222, reception following in the Parish Hall.

I was a student of Milwauke high school. I met BZ my freshmen year. He took me under his wing he helped me by guiding me through high school. Nearly every day after school him and I would go do side jobs for the staff and friends of Milwauke high. He taught me everything I know about remodeling and etc. I graduated high school thanks to Bill helped me throughout my high school days. He took me for a cruise on his yacht for my graduation present and what he picked up his wife in Seattle Jackie and she sailed the sea along with us to the beautiful harbor in the San Juan Islands. We went to Friday harbor road harbor along the way the best summer of my life we left a couple days after graduation and got back before school started again for Bill. I would try to skip school he would come to my house and wake me up and make me go to school he would sit there and wait for me to get ready to take me. He has done so so much for me I can't explain how blessed and lucky I was. He took me to school clothes shopping at the beginning of every school year in high school paid for it with his own money if it wasn't for him I would not have graduated. We spent a lot of time together doing jobs for teachers at Milwaukee high School building fences or whatever. I'm broke into hear this news. Much love BZ. Love Raymond (or Lloyd was my nick name he gave me from the first very damn met him until the day he passed away) he definitely went above and beyond with me and because of my mother wasn't able to do stuff for me then Bill stepped in and help me have a good 4 years of high school. He was like the father I never had he'll always be in my heart much love.

Bill was always a ray of sunshine whenever he came in to Sunrise MS!
He connected with the kids who needed extra care in a rare and good way!
It was my pleasure to have gotten to know him. I am so sad that he was taken from us too soon. My heart hurts for his family.

I worked with Bill for many years at Milwaukie High School. As a counselor, I appreciated collaborating with him on keeping some challenging students in school. He had a talent for connecting with these kids and their families in an honest, supportive, no nonsense manner. He was a special guy.

Bill taught me the true art of a successful home visit. These things included genuine care for students, positive connections with families, and lots of laughter on the drive there and back. Bill never said no when I called him to ask if he could help me and join me in supporting a really challenging situation. He believed in me as a young educator and joined me in partnership to help others. He would give me random phone calls once a year after he retired just to check in and see how things were going. It was great to hear about all his adventures in retirement as well as all of his stories throughout his career. I´m so thankful for his friendship and support and want his family to know how much I appreciated him. Our schools and communities were better because of him!

Bill helped our family on so many house projects, always insisting that one of us help. Why? Maybe it was the teacher in him, passing along knowledge and know-how. Maybe it was the mentor in him who knew I needed proof that I could handle big things in life-- like rewiring my entire house. Maybe he simply enjoyed the company. Whatever the reason, the lines blurred forever between handyman and friend. I don't have a photo to share, but I will forever remember Bill's charm, his cheer, and the same old bad jokes he couldn't help but repeat. Bill Zehner's mark on my heart is indelible.

Bill was always a huge help to me when I needed him to go with me to visit families. He always made time and I appreciated that. He was a valuable part of our NCSD community and will be missed dearly. Bill, you´re with the Angels now and hope you can look down upon all of us with a smile.

What a great teacher. Positivity influenced so many lives!! I´m glad I got a chance to work with him. I was the autism consultant.

As a fresh special education teacher, Bill called things out bluntly (the only way!), helped me to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and gave me so much encouragement. He took me for a drink one day (of course non alcoholic) and just told me I had my head on right. You'll be greatly missed sir.

I crossed paths with Bill a few times as a young SPED student in NCSD. He was one of the rare adult figures that I looked up to and helped make school more enjoyable. Now at 33yrs old, I´ve gone back to school (PSU) to get my MA in Special Education.

Thank you for being a positive influence to my younger self.

Miss you, BZ. So many adventures with you. So many times you made me laugh (often despite the, umm, `quality´ of your humor). Here´s a cool thing: you are kinda here at my house forever, because you and Troy built my deck. Love from Con.
