Mount Horeb - Dr. William A. "Bill" Zimmer, DVM, a cherished husband, father, son, brother, and friend, passed away on December 8, 2023, at the age of 60, after a courageous battle with a rare form of cancer, Extramammary Paget Disease. Born on December 31, 1962, in
Appleton, WI, Bill was a man of exceptional intellect and kindness, whose presence brightened the lives of all who knew him. He departed this world in
Madison, WI, surrounded by the love of his family.
Bill's journey through life was marked by his dedication to his family, his passion for veterinary medicine, and his love for the great outdoors. After graduating Salutatorian from Freedom High School in 1981, he pursued his dream of becoming a veterinarian at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine, where he graduated in 1988. His commitment to animal welfare and his analytical mind made him a respected figure in his field. He mixed animal practice with focusing on large animal/ dairy cows.
Dr. William "Bill" Zimmer, a visionary entrepreneur whose profound impact on animal health has left an indelible mark on the field, passed away recently surrounded by the love and warmth of his friends and family. He was a man whose life was defined by his intelligence, wisdom, and generosity. Bill's journey into the world of animal health began with his education and passion for veterinary science. His innate ability to understand production animals led him to a distinguished career as a veterinarian where he was not only revered by his peers but also deeply trusted by the farmers whose animals he treated. Bill's entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish Bio-Vet in 1991, a company that became synonymous with innovation in the creation and manufacture of animal microbial and nutrition products.
Under Bill's leadership, Bio-Vet thrived, developing numerous innovative products that utilize groundbreaking technologies to improve the wellbeing of animals. His commitment to excellence and his forward-thinking approach were evident in every facet of his business, from research and development to customer service, both national and international.
The legacy of Bill Zimmer is one of profound achievements and compassionate leadership. As a pioneer in the field of animal health, his contributions will continue to benefit countless lives. Bill's memory will be cherished and honored by all who had the privilege of knowing him and by the industry that he helped to shape. Known for his generous spirit and intelligent approach to life, Bill was a pillar of strength and support to his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Nicole; their children Zachary and Keanna; his mother Marilyn Zimmer; his brother Kevin (Erin) Zimmer; his mother-in-law Gloria Schauf; brothers-in- law Kurt (Renee) Schauf and Kelly (Jodi) Schauf; as well as his niece and nephews Dalton, Erica, Wyatt, Owen, Ben, and Jack. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched. Bill was preceded in death by his father Dennis Zimmer, his father-in-law John Schauf, and his grandparents Lavern and Delores Zimmer, and Frances and Harold Woehler.
An outdoor enthusiast, Bill spent countless hours under the open sky, engaging in activities that brought him joy and peace. Whether it was playing volleyball, fishing in Canada or the Red Banks area, or ice fishing in Minnesota, he cherished every moment. His adventurous spirit led him on hunting trips to Canada for caribou and to Idaho for antelope and elk, alongside his brother and father. Deer hunting seasons at the family cabin were among his most treasured times. Bill's love for the outdoors was matched by his love for classic cars, taking pleasure in rides in Nicole& Bill's 1969 SS Camero convertible.
Bill so enjoyed his time with his children, coaching his son in youth football and bird hunting and coaching his daughter in volleyball and going fishing.
Bill's analytical mind was balanced by a heart full of generosity. He was always ready to lend a hand or share his knowledge with anyone in need. His intelligence shone not only in his professional life but also in the wise counsel he offered to friends and family. These qualities, combined with his unwavering integrity, made him a man who was deeply respected and will be profoundly missed.
As we say farewell to Dr. William A. Zimmer, we celebrate a life lived with purpose, love, and a deep connection to the natural world. His memory will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him.
