Mary Margaret Eaton Cox
June 24, 1921-May 8, 2017
Conway
Mrs. Mary Margaret Eaton Cox, widow of David Hugh Cox, passed away peacefully at Brookdale Conway on May 08, 2017.
Mrs. Cox was born June 24, 1921, in Greenville, SC, the daughter of the late Lafayette Claud and Maude Pitchford Gupton Eaton. She was predeceased by her brothers, Lafayette Claud Eaton, Jr. and June William Eaton. Mrs. Cox eloped to Spartanburg, SC with the love of her life, Hugh Cox, on April 29, 1939. They enjoyed a happy and active life together for 53 wonderful years until his death on March 24, 1991. Mrs. Cox is survived by two loving daughters and their spouses, Anne Jean Cox Abbott and husband, Haskell Thomas Abbott, III of Conway, SC and Mary Ellen Cox Vaughan and husband, Jack Hubert Vaughan, Jr. of Lugoff, SC; her grandchildren, Hyde Taylor Abbott of Conway, SC, Anne Victoria Abbott Golson and husband Francis Wavely Golson, III of Columbia, SC, Jack Hubert Vaughan, III and wife MaryAnna Buntain Vaughan of McDonough, GA, and David Ray Vaughan and wife Nina Mixon Vaughan of Lugoff, SC; her great-grandchildren, Ann Taylor Abbott of Spartanburg, SC, Baylor Hyde Abbott of Boone, NC, Stratford McClam Abbott of Conway, SC, Amy Catherine Vaughan, Robert Ethan Vaughan, Kadin Spencer Vaughan, all of McDonough, GA, David Hunter Vaughan and Dylan Alexandra Vaughan, both of Lugoff, SC; her "adopted daughter", Jane Pound Inabinet of St. Matthews, SC; and several nieces and nephews.
Before relocating to Conway in 2005, Mrs. Cox made her home for 75 years in Mauldin, SC, where she and her husband reared their daughters. Having graduated from Mauldin High School and studying mechanical engineering at Greenville Technical College, she enjoyed a career as Quality Control Specialist in Textiles at Steele Heddle Manufacturing in Greenville, SC. She started her own business in her "spare time" designing and creating a more attractive protective headwear for female industrial workers. Mrs. Cox was active in her community in the Order of the Eastern Star, Empire Chapter. She also served as a volunteer at her daughters' schools and participated in many roles at Reedy River Presbyterian Church. She was well-known for her skills as a hostess, cook, and gardener.
In Conway, Mrs. Cox was welcomed and immediately became involved in Kingston Presbyterian Church, The Quattlebaum Circle, Iris Garden Club, First Baptist B.A.L.L. Club, Conway Sewing Club, Peter Horry Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and various groups and clubs. She enjoyed traveling worldwide, reading, and learning. Her genealogical curiosity and research led to historical documents that are housed in the Mauldin archives. Mrs. Cox was a loving, serene, encouraging woman of faith and she made it her personal ministry to assist women who had lost partners. She was a willing listener and comforter. Her example of beginning a new adventure in life at 85 serves as an inspiration to all. A daughter describes her as "a dear Christian friend to all who knew her, befriending people from all walks of life.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at Kingston Presbyterian Church, officiated by Rev. O. Rhett Talbert. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on the church grounds.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00PM Thursday, May 11, 2017 at Mauldin United Methodist Church Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Gaynor Phillips. The family will receive friends at the graveside following the service.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Brookdale Conway for their attentive and devoted care.
Memorial donations may be made to Kingston Presbyterian Church Youth Ministry, 800 3rd Avenue, Conway, SC 29626 or to the charity of one's choice.
