Willie Dancy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 11 to May 13, 2008.
After several months of declining health our beloved one, Willie Lee Dancy, of 12462 Owen Ave., Stony Creek, Va., entered into eternal rest on Saturday, May 10, 2008, at the Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, Va.

Willie Dancy was born on June 11, 1912, in Rocky Mount, N.C., to the late Minnie Boyd Dancy and Richard Dancy Sr. At an early age Willie and his family relocated to Stony Creek, Va., where he attended Sussex County Public Schools. It was shortly after this move he confessed Christ and became a member of the Little Bethel Baptist Church, Stony Creek, Va. There he was an active member and thought highly of his church family in both mind and spirit until his timely demise.

Later in his years Willie was employed with the Atlantic Coastline Railroad and then the United States Postal Service where he served over 60 dedicated years as a transportation contractor. Willie was not only a devoted worker, father and husband, but a leader in his community. He never met a stranger and always treated his neighbors with respect and dignity. He opened his heart and home to many people who will miss his gentle smile and caring personality.

Willie was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Fannie Stith Dancy; three brothers, Johnny Dancy, Richard Dancy Jr. and James Dancy; three sisters, Bettye D. Dillard, Sarah D. Jackson and Josephine D. Walker; one grandson, Roderick Swift-Dancy.

He leaves to cherish his memory two devoted children, a daughter, Rosalyn Mason-Dancy, and a son, Milton L. Dancy (Gale), both of Stony Creek, Va.; two sisters, Hattie D. Stith of Stony Creek, Va., and Geneva Daughtery (Walter) of Temple Hills, Md.; one sister-in-law ,Virginia Wyche of Hopewell, Va.; two loving and devoted granddaughters, Tamara Mason of Richmond, Va., and Sherita Dancy of Petersburg, Va.; one foster grandson, Charles Blowe (Elaine) of Topping, Va.; four great-grandchildren, Shacorey, Sherell, Shamar and Shamon, all of Petersburg, Va.; two great-foster grandchildren, Jazmyn and Roderick Blowe of Topping, Va.; a list of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, amongst them several dedicated individuals, Ruben Walker Jr., Hellion Flowers, Hazel Mason, Rosa B. Jones, Antonio Moore and Bernard Gurley.

A homegoing celebration for Mr. Dancy will be held at noon on Thursday, May 15, 2008, at the Galilee Baptist Church, Stony Creek, with the pastor, the Rev. Dr. L.A. James, officiating, and the Rev. David L. Banks Sr., eulogizing. The burial will commence at the Dinwiddie Memorial Park. Public viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at the Little Bethel Baptist Church, Stony Creek. On the morning of the service, the family will assemble at the residence at 11 for the procession.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Joseph M. Johnson & Son Funeral Home, (804) 478-4411.
