I was one of the youngsters who waited for Willie after home games in the 1960's in the Candlestick Park parking lot to talk and laugh with him. I loved watching him swing and run, and the people in the bleachers all smiled at the little girl yelling "Yay Willie! Go, go, go! " I loved his bright smile and how nice he was to us kids crowding around his car. Fondest memories. I wish I reached out earlier. Not goodbye, I hold you as a childhood memory.

When I was a little boy in Norfolk,Va..I asked my mother to buy a box Post Raisin Brand Cereal. It had a cutout baseball card of Willie Mays on the back of the box.I did not eat the cereal, but was so happy to have that card.He was the greatest ballplayer ever.Their is no doubt in my mind that if he had not lost two years serving his country,he would have broken Babe Ruth's home run record. You were The Greatest Ballplayer Ever.My you Rest In Peace now with God and his angels. My condolences to The Willie Mays family and all Giant and baseball fans everywhere.

Apparently, Tom Seaver worshipped Willie. He would button his shirt the same as Willie. In '73 at the start of a game Seaver was scheduled to pitch, Willie asked Seaver how he was going to pitch to each of the opposing batters. Seaver asked why? Willie replied that if he know how Tom was going to pitch each batter, then he could position himslf properly in center field. Anothr example of Willie's baseball intelligence.

I grew up in the Bay Area watching him play in 1959, 60, 61 and many more. The year they won the Pennant! I’ll never forget. I was a crazy Giants fan at 9-12 years old, kept a scrap book, got his autograph. What more can I say. My whole family were and still are diehard Giant fans. No matter where I lived I followed them mainly because of my love for Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Orlando Cepeda, thee Alou Brothers, Juan Marishall, need I go on? God Bless him so. He has no idea how or who or when he touched and seeped into our lives. Thank God I was alive the same time he was.

I was only 8 when he came to the Mets. I couldn't really remember '69. The Mets were structured around pitching and defense, and had never really had a great offensive player. I loved Tom Seaver, but Willie was different. He wasn't merely a great player, he was baseball royalty. I read a paperback autobiography of his life, with a little piece added at the end of him coming to Mets and hitting the game winning HR in his first game. I was so proud he wore a Mets uniform. I also saw for the first time that even the great ones get old and father time is undefeated. It was crushing to me as a 10 year old that the Mets could come so far, against incalcuable odds, only to lose the last two games of the WS. I learned that baseball can really break your heart, and you have to have thick skin. However, it still breaks my heart that they couldn't get Willie another ring as he retired.

We are deeply saddened in the passing of Mr. Willie Mays.
Mr. Mays was a graduate of Fairfield Industrial High School where he starred in football and basketball. His baseball journey started in the Fairfield Industrial League. He graduated from Fairfield Industrial High School and joined the Birmingham Black Barons.
Willie Mays Park in Fairfield is the home for many little league baseball teams.
He grew up on 57th street and enjoyed the neighborhood streets with his friends.
We are thankful for his legacy in Fairfield.

Willie is as close to royalty as we have in baseball or anywhere in the United States...even those with a passing knowledge or interest in the game recognize his name. My greatest memory of him was seeing him tag a Jim Farrell fastball in the 9th inning on the last day of the 1962 season to send the Giants into the playoffs --ball travelled further into the left field pavilion than any HR I ever saw at Candlestick. Seeing it with my Dad made it extra special. Dad stood in line after the game to get tickets for the first playoff game---saw Willie help Billy Piece win game one of the playoffs Monday afternoon, October 1, 1962. What a thrilling weekend thanks to Willie!

Baseball is a team sport. However, some players make it exciting to watch! Willie Mays was one of a few players that captured the audience attention. What he did for baseball, is what Muhammad Ali did for boxing, what Michael Jordan did for basketball, what Tiger Woods did for golf and what Jim Brown did for football. Rest in peace.

I was 9 years old living in Pittsfield, MA when the Giants beat the Dodgers in the playoffs. From that moment on, I became a Giants fan because I loved the way Willie played the game. When I joined the NY Giants Baseball Preservation Society back in 2010, I finally got to shake his hand (which was huge!).
Willie was the greatest ballplayer I ever saw, an outstanding ambassador of baseball, and a fine role model both on and off the field.
My close friend, colleague, and fellow member of the NYGBPS, Tom Dames, also shared a love for Willie and the NY Giants. He ranked shaking Willie's hand right along side that of shaking hands with Pope Francis in Italy.
We loved Willie. Condolences to Michael, his family, and all of Willie's fans across the globe.

Willie Howard Mays Jr
I was born the year after he began his iconic Major League career. When I was old enough to play baseball....I was always "Willie Mays". Yep. Me and Willie....we were the same cat. My baseball hero. I found a used baseball glove at a flea market. It was an imitation Willie Mays glove. His name engraved in the leather. To me, it was like finding plutonium or a pot of gold or....something. I still have it. I plan on taking it to Heaven so he can autograph it for me.
Forever Rest in Heavenly Peace Mr Mays. ❤
p.s. (he wasn't the perfect ballplayer.......but he was daaamn close) And you can bet your "Say Hey" on that.

Growing up on the north side of Golden Gate Bridge, I saw my 1st Giants game in person when 9 years old. I was so excited to see Mays and McCovey, as Mays was my childhood hero! I recalled a game in 1969 at Candlestick when Mays hit a two-out walk-off game-winning HR in 9th to break up Astros no-hitter and shutout, as Giants won 1-0. On the flip side, in 1968 or 1969 when I followed a game on my transistor and listening to Mays striking out for 4th time in the game. I felt so sad for Mays and it taught me a lesson in life that even the best people in life are prone to failing or having very bad games. I love you, Willie! Thanks for the joys you brought to my childhood life when I was going through difficult times at home.
