Willie Wong's Hundred Year Legacy was his Family

0n July 29, 2016, Willie Wong peacefully passed away, at home in Oxnard, CA. He had been a Ventura County resident for most of the last 20 years, living with his son and daughter in law, Donald and Lorraine Wong. He celebrated his 100th birthday this past April, and was loved by all who knew him.

Willie was born in Vallejo, CA on April 3, 1916. When his family moved to Santa Rosa, his parents, Sam and Minnie Wong, established the first Chinese Restaurant there. After his service in the Army, he moved to Sacramento, CA with his wife Mabel (nee Leong) and four children in the late 1940's. He worked at McClellan AFB, and eventually owned their own grocery store and motel. He also worked for Green Giant before retiring.

From a very early age, Willie loved to fish and hunt, and throughout his lifetime has taught five generations of family to love fishing as much as he did. He was a master at catching fish in the rice paddies, rivers & streams in Sacramento. He was always ready to go fishing, no matter what time of day. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, cooking, gardening, sports programs, playing slots and most of all eating his favorite foods.

While living in Ventura County, he loved bass fishing at Lake Casitas and Lake Cachuma, going to Dodgers games, the Chumash Casino, Las Vegas, movies at the Roxy, his Great grandsons (C.J. & Gavin's) baseball games and watching them surf at the beach, as well as attending his Great granddaughter (Shia's) dance recitals. He enjoyed going out to eat, and loved his daughter in law (Lorraine's) cooking (especially her famous Tomato Beef Chow Mein!)

Willie had four children, Eddie Wong-Dai, Donald (sp. Lorraine) Wong, Shirley (Keeter) Wong-Snider and Lorraine Fong. Eight grandchildren: Derek Dai and Tyson Dai; Yvette (sp. Terry) DuHamel and Everett (sp. Shelly) Wong; Barry (sp. Georgette) Keeter, Scott (sp. Dawn) Keeter; Kendolyn Fong and Vaughn Fong. He also had sixteen (16) Great grandchildren and six (6) Great-Great grandchildren. He is survived by his sister Charlotte Lau (San Francisco) and was predeceased by his brother Bob (sp.Hazel) Wong (Santa Rosa).

Willie will always be remembered for his sense of humor, lessons that he taught, a smile that could light up every room and most of all...his favorite line, "Let's go fishing!" His family finds great comfort in knowing that Willie is with his wife Mabel in Heaven with God, and they will be watching over them together.

Memorial Services for Willie Wong will be on Sat., August 6, 2016 at 11:00am at Mount Cross Lutheran Church, 102 Camino Esplendido, Camarillo, CA 93010 (805) 482-3847. He will be buried in Sacramento with his wife Mabel on a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Mount Cross Endowment Fund in his honor.
