Winifred I. "Winnie" Stiegel, 97, of East Moline, passed away Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at Rosewood Care Center, Moline. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at the Community of Christ Church, Moline. Memorials may be made to the Animal Aid Humane Society, Moline, or the Quad City Animal Welfare Center, Milan. Van Hoe Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Winnie was born Jan. 9, 1907, in Savanna, Ill., the daughter of Eli and Anna Miller. She was adopted at the age of four by her Aunt and Uncle, Riley and Bertha Douglas. She married John C. Stiegel, June 30, 1929, in Savanna. Winnie received her Bachelors degree from Marycrest College, and her Masters Degree from Western Illinois University, Macomb, Ill. She was always a dedicated teacher, starting her career in a one-room country school in Massbach, Ill., and Chestnut School in Savanna. She was Principal and teacher at Wells School, East Moline. She taught at Logan School, Moline, and at Hoopeston, Ill. She returned to the Quad Cities and retired from Wells School. Following retirement, she taught at a private Christian School and did substitute teaching at United Township High School, and also taught G.E.D Classes at Blackhawk College, Moline. She tutored and gave piano lessons in her home well into her 90's. Winnie also gave programs to various groups on handwriting analysis. She wrote and directed many plays and was a prodigious writer of poetry and songs. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints, where she was devoted to the Restoration Branch and was active in the Sunday School Department.
She is survived by her daughters (spouse), Carol (Ben) Howard, East Moline, and Donna Periolat, San Carlos, Calif.; four grandchildren, Troi McCormick, East Moline, Randall Howard, Holt, Mo., Stephanie Howard, Moline, and Monica Ausdal, Milan, Ill; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John, her parents, sister, Helen Stiegel, brother, Hugh Miller.
