Wolfgang Langenbacher Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 22 to Nov. 24, 2014.
Wolfgang Gerhard Langenbacher (65) died surrounded by his family, on November 18, 2014 after a series of strokes. He dedicated his life in service to his family, community, city, and province.

Wolfgang was born in Bamberg, Germany on December 13, 1948 and spent the first years of his life in his mother Theresa's hometown, Trieb. In 1956, he emigrated to Cleveland, Ohio and graduated from Kent State University in 1971. After pursuing graduate studies at UBC in Vancouver he relocated to Regina in 1975.

Wolfgang devoted almost 40 years to public service. After a position with the provincial Department of Revenue, he moved to the City of Regina Comptroller's Office in 1982 where he eventually became Auditor General in 1990. From 1998-2005 he was Dean of Business and Agriculture at SIAST. Over the last decade, he became politically involved with the federal Conservative Party and the Saskatchewan Party. His last positions were with the Premier's Executive Council and the Department of Social Services. He retired in December 2013, but continued to teach in the School of Business at the University of Regina.

Wolfgang was incredibly devoted to his family. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Linda; his sons, Eric and Mark; and his grandsons, Adam and Max. He was heavily involved in his community: coaching, fundraising, political and charity work.

A memorial service is planned in the near future. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to the Canadian Diabetes Association.

I look forward to the memorial to share some Wolfgang stories. I knew Wolfgang from his SIAST days but didn't really get to know him until the University of Regina. One of my favourite times at the Faculty of Business Admin. was a regular visit from Wolfgang. We would talk about things that mattered, things we were passionate about. I have to admit I liked to get Wolfgang going as he was so passionate. Yet, Wolfgang was a fan of the underdog and you could see his compassion for people who needed help. He was a huge contributor to public service and a much valued colleague and friend.

I worked with Wolfgang in the political part of his life, on the board of the Conservative Party of the Palliser Electoral District . I remember his keen insights and his ability to express himself forcefully and with passion. Good memories - he is gone too soon.

Wolfgang was a marvellous human able to bring joy, humour and wit to those around him. His life was dedicated to making those around him as healthy and wealthy as he could. Without a doubt the most forthright, no-nonsense professor I have had. I owe my fruits in enterprise to him, in large part. My deepest condolences to Linda, Mark, and Eric.

I was shocked and saddened to learn of Wolfgang's passing. I worked with Wolfgang at Social Services. Beneath a sometimes gruff exterior there was a heart of gold . . . and a wicked sense of humour. I really enjoyed our discussions and will miss him. As a public servant he made significant contributions to our province. To Linda, Eric, and Mark - I hope you can find comfort in the memories of your time together.

I was very sorry to hear of Wolfgang's passing and would like to extend my deepest condolences to Linda and the family. I had the opportunity to work together with Wolfgang at SIAST for ten years. He was a valued colleague and a generous friend.

His gruff exterior, strength of spirit, sardonic wit and heart of gold truly made 'Woofie' one of a kind. The world will surely be a sadder place without him.

I had the pleasure of knowing Wolfgang in a number of different settings and roles. Although his passing touches all who knew him, the children of Regina (and Saskatchewan) have lost a long-time advocate and friend. His support of organizations and groups assisting kids to have healthier, happier and richer lives was the thing which initially brought us together and remained a consistently shared interest over the course of thirty-some years.

Wolf's pragmatic social conscience, keen sense of humour, dry wit, deadpan delivery and ability to cut to the chase were things I appreciated and will remember most about him.

My deepest condolences to Linda, Eric, Mark & family.

Linda, Eric and Mark:
I was saddened to hear of Wolfgang's sudden passing. We spent several years working together in the City Comptroller's Office. While I recall Wolfgang's strong dedication to his work, the thing that I remember most about him is that he was as a caring husband and very proud father. He often spoke of his sons' activities and their accomplishments and how much he cared about his family. He will be missed.

I graduated earlier this year from the EMBA program at U of R. Wolfgang taught us our Government Relations class. There were two of us named Tracey in the class so he simply named us Tracey 1 and Tracey 2. It became our monikers through many of our other classes. Of 12 classes to obtain the degree, Wolfgang was absolutely one of my favorite teachers. He wore his passions on his sleeve. My sincere condolences on his passing. Life is simply too short.

Linda, Eric, Mark and Family:
Condolences at the untimely passing of Wolfgang. I first worked with Wolfgang in the late 1970's in the City Comptroller's Office, connected later through SAIST, then the University of Regina and again at Executive Council in the Government of Saskatchewan. We both were active in the Institute of Public Administration of Canada for more than 30 years. I remember the boys growing up and how proud Wolfgang was of their accomplishments. Always generous with his time, I will remember his strong views, enthusiasm and his laughter. He will be missed by all.

I will truly miss Wolfgang. When I worked with him in recent years, the passioned debate we had every morning over Saskatchewan and Canadian issues were a true joy. A committed public servant that left his acquaintances much richer for having known him.

It's a terrible loss of a brilliant mind, and a great neighbour.

I am truly saddened to her of Wolfgang's passing. Under that gruff exterior was a kind and generous man who cared deeply for his family and his friends. He loved talking about his grandsons and the things they were doing. Wolfgang was loyal, astute and quick with his wit. He understood the value of relationships and made every effort he could to keep friendships active. I will really miss him. If ever there was a time I wished I was in Regina instead of California, it is now. My sincere condolences to his family - you were the center of his universe and everything he did was about you. I, and many more, have lost a good friend. Marian
