WORTHAM SPILMAN Obituary

SPILMAN, Wortham Anderson Jr., son of Louise Wilmer Spilman and Wortham Anderson Spilman, was born in Richmond September 28, 1920 and died December 2, 2011. He was graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1938 and Virginia Military Institute in 1942. Mr. Spilman entered the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant and went to the Calvary School at Ft. Riley, Kansas. After graduation, he joined the 6th Cavalry Regiment and was stationed in Northern Ireland during World War II. He retired from the Army as a Captain in 1946. In 1948, he went to work for the J.S. Archer Company and retired as co-owner of that company after 35 years. He married Alice Marshall Taylor in Richmond in 1948. Mr. Spilman was a member of St. James's Episcopal Church for 63 years where he served on the Vestry and as assistant treasurer for 25 years, as well as serving on the Every Member Canvas. He served as volunteer for 15 years for Meals on Wheels. Mr. Spilman was past president of the Westhampton Citizens Association, a member of the Country Club of Virginia, having served on its board; a member of the Pilgrims and the Out of Bounds golf groups. He is survived by his wife of 63 years and three daughters, Isabel Spilman Bates and her husband, Malcolm, Margaret Spilman Crowley and her husband, Michael, and Alice Spilman Frankovitch and her husband, Eric; eight grandchildren, Alec Bates, his wife, Jennifer, Marshall Bates Rigby and her husband, Matthew, David Crowley, Andrew Crowley, Mark Frankovitch, Taylor Frankovitch, Carl Frankovitch and John Frankovitch; and great-grandchildren, Thomas Rigby and Isabel Rigby. He is also survived by a brother-in-law, George Taylor and his wife, Suzanne; a sister-in-law, Jane Wagner Spilman; and his two nieces, Connie Spilman and Lynn Spilman Williams. He was predeceased by his brother, Wilmer Spilman; and his brother-in-law, Henry Taylor. The family will receive friends Monday, December 5, from 2 to 5 p.m. at 2179 Cedarfield Lane. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 6, at St. James's Episcopal Church, 1205 West Franklin St. in Richmond. Interment will be in Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. James's Episcopal Church, or VMI Foundation Inc., P.O. Box 932, Lexington, Va. 24450.
