Zachary Zernik Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 6, 2023.
Zachary "Zack, Z-Squared, ZZ, Zack Attack, Brud Bruds, Zackster" John Zernik, 22, of Thousand Oaks, California, passed away Saturday January 28, 2023, while surrounded by the nature he loved. He was born on September 27, 2000. He is survived by his loving family including mother Elizabeth, father Fred, sister, Marina, grandfathers John Kubis and Gunter Zernik, and many relatives. He was preceded by his beloved grandmothers Norma Zernik and Ruth Kubis. Zachary loved life and was an amazing son, brother, cousin and friend. He embraced many aspects of the wonderful Conejo Valley and surrounding area, including scouting, wrestling, academics, and Muay Thai.

Zack was an accomplished Triple Crown high adventurer, earning his Eagle Scout and celebrating with his many friends of Troop 753 "the Purple Troop." He loved music and played saxophone from his early days at Aspen Elementary School, to the marching band at Redwood, jazz band at Thousand Oaks High School, and was excited to join jazz band with his friends at Moorpark College. While in high school, Zack was named the varsity MVP in wrestling, and was on varsity beach and indoor volleyball teams. He was also accepted into Thousand Oaks' AP Capstone Program, The Center for Advanced Studies & Research, and was a member of the Jewish student fellowship.

He went to UCLA and enjoyed working hard at Roadside Lumber in Agoura. He loved building things with wood, including a beer pong table for his wrestling friend at Moorpark. In 2023, he went to State with the Moorpark College wrestling team and was excited to be in the engineering program at Moorpark College. He ran marathons and hiked the Trans Sierra trail multiple times, including Eagle Peak and Mt. Whitney. He loved skiing at Mammoth and Lake Tahoe with family and friends and playing volleyball with "Team Zernik" and the Zuma Beach crew. He was a certified SCUBA diver and coral restoration specialist. He touched the life of so many and will be truly missed and never forgotten.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday February 13th at 10am at the Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa Visitors Center, 4121 Potrero Road, Newbury Park, CA 91320. Family and friends are invited to come and share fond memories and stories.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this as Zach helped to create many special moments while a member of the Band Program at Thousand Oaks High School.
Zach celebrated life in everything he did. He was constantly looking on how he could uplift his experience and those around him at every rehearsal and performance.

His spirit and humor were infectious to all those around him. He will be greatly missed by his band family.

Zack was so accomplished, yet he rarely mentioned his accomplishments; he was a saxophonist who chose not to toot his own horn. A true humble hero, his natural and playful compassion contrasted with his feats of derring-do. You may have been a quiet leader, Zack, but your example resonates loudly and clearly.

Life is lessened by your passing, but we have been more than enriched by the short time you spent on this earth. Fred, Elizabeth and Marina - thank you for sharing Zack with so many. We smile whenever we think of all of us biking to Stearns Wharf together. Zack is in the thoughts and prayers of every circle within this community. This a testament to Zach´s humility and radiance, and of his loving family´s enduring influence upon him.

Much love,
Paul & Suzi Liu

Zach was a remarkable kid. I was at his Eagle Court of Honor and he was so happy for that achievement. I knew Zach was going to be successful and accomplished. He had such a wonderful spirit about him and he lit up the room when he entered. Gone too soon. May God beless the Zernick family and let his memory live on in the hearts and minds of all that knew him.

I played soccer with Zack's dad. One day, his dad told me that Zack wanted to give away his old collection of Legos and asked me if my son would take it. I said yes, and my son and I were very grateful for Zack's generous gesture. I visited the Zernicks a couple of times after that. I chatted with Zack and played foosball with him. He was a brilliant, generous young man. We are saddened for the rest of his life that is not to be, and for his family. May they find consolation and may he rest in peace.

All through the school years, Zack was right in between my kids grade levels, and I have many memories of seeing him in activities, winning awards, and working hard, always with a smile. He was always impressive! My deepest condolences to the family.

I was fortunate to have met Zack since 2017 through my brother Anthony who was a mentor to Zack for years. The last I talked to Zack was early 2022 at my brother's house. He was full of excitement about what he was doing in his life. I was saddened to learn of his passing. I offer my deepest condolences to his parents, sister and relatives. Rest in peace Zack. You lived your life to its fullest. You shall always be remembered by those you touched and that loved you.
