Zack Powell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 2, 2020.

David "Zack" Powell (1956-2020)

And now abide faith, hope, love these three; but the greatest of these is love. (1st Cor. Ch. 13. Verse 13)

David "Zack" Powell was born in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma on May 23,1956. Zack is survived by his wife of 34 years, Marla Powell of Wayne; his sons, Eric Powell and wife Angie of Lexington and Jordan Powell of Lexington; three grandchildren Blake Powell, Gracie Powell, and Mason Powell;

Sister, Rebecca Jones of Wayne and brother John Powell and wife Dana of Wayne.  Zack's love and devotion to his family knew no bounds. Through this, he was the tie that kept the family together.  His greatest satisfaction was that he was secure in the belief that his and Marla’s two sons and three grandchildren are well on their way to being good loving people.

In addition to his family, Zack was devoted to a cadre of friends, many of whom he had known since childhood. He viewed these friends as extensions of his immediate family. Through his care of the sick, his ongoing role as a counselor to the troubled of spirit, and his many charitable gifts, Zack made all those around him better for having known him. A lifelong member of the Church of Christ in Wayne, Zack believed in the power of love to bring about real changes in people's lives.

An honor student at the University of Oklahoma, Zack obtained both his Bachelors and his Master’s degrees in education. His professional life was primarily spent by serving Wayne Public Schools for thirty-four years, as a coach, principal, and over two decades as superintendent of schools. His tenure at Wayne saw numerous advancements in the academic and athletic programs. His proudest moment was having the new football stadium named in his honor this past fall.

Zack's generosity of spirit is his enduring legacy.

Funeral Services are scheduled for 1:00 P.M., Wednesday, February 5, 2020, at the First Baptist Church in Purcell. Burial will follow at the Paoli Cemetery. Send online condolences @ www.wilsonlittle.com.

Zack was loved by our family! My Uncle Bud and Mom (Sequita) thought the world of him. My children, Kyle and Leigh, have enjoyed talking with him at each OU football game while he always sat directly in front of them for so many years! Zack will be missed. My prayers for your family and your Church family at Wayne Church of Christ today and for the many days to come. May you remember the joy you had with your husband, dad, and Christian brother.

He will be missed by many. He had an impact on so many people over the years. He had a gift of always seeming to talk with you instead of talking at you. The world is a bit less without knowing he is still in it. Rest In Peace my friend.

Zach didn't decide to grow in physical stature until his Senior year in Hight School, or maybe even his freshman year in college. He never did grow to the size of big brother John. What Zach did do was grow in character to become a Christian man, husband, father, son, brother, and leader in the community. My heart felt condolences to all the family and friends. I am at your service.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Powell family. What a shock and sadness to lose such a good friend and mentor in Zack. We really became close these last 15 years when we moved to Purcell. We had wonderful times together whether it be on the golf course, OU football games, or just getting together and hanging out as friends do. He was my mentor when I decided to become a Superintendent & was always the first one I would call if I had a question. Zack was a great man, mentor and friend whom I will miss greatly. Heaven got a first class person in Mr. Zack Powell.

So many emotions right now. Just a few hours previous we finished a round of golf where he had carded 4 birdies. He was so positive and inspiring as he had been hundreds of times before. I still can't believe he is gone.
Proud to have rode the bench together at WHS proud to serve on school board and most of all just being his friend.

I spent 8 of the best years of my teaching career at Wayne. When my brother died, I was concerned about getting home because pay day was several days off. Mr. Powell found out and presented me with my paycheck. He said, If this is the least I can do for you, I will do this. Compassion for others sorrows, love for everyone.

Zack was one of thirteen lifelong friends that began the first grade at Wayne schools in the fall of 1962 thru the Spring of 1974 when we all graduated. Most of us all went our separate ways but the bond that we all shared is still strong today spanning over over 50 years. He is the first to leave our elite little group.
Zack was my friend. I will miss him greatly. He definitely made a difference in this world.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
Until we meet again, my friend, Rest In Peace.
