Zena Weinkle Obituary

Published by Miami Herald on Aug. 26, 2013.
WEINKLE, ZENA She walked in beauty She danced with grace An Indomitable spirit A fabulous face That was our mother. What a woman. What a beautiful blessing. She taught us many life lessons... each one by example. Smile when you meet someone... be kind... show respect... and above all... realize the importance of FAMILY. We are four siblings that are bound together in a life long safety net... the" boys" and the "girls" created from one of the great love affairs of the century and nurtured with a lifetime of love. Zena was born on December 8, 1920 in Charlotte, NC. She was the middle child of five siblings. As a child she attended Miss Henderson's School of Dance where she excelled in tap dancing. She attended the University of Illinois where she choreo-graphed musical dance product-ions. Just a few weeks short of graduating she tore up all her final exam notes and left college to marry the love of her life Jerry Weinkle in June 1941... they were married for 70 years. A storybook love affair that all who knew her observed daily. There wasn't a pedestal tall enough for our Dad to place her on. He loved her uncondi-tionally and completely. Dance was a part of her life... as recently as last month she attended a hip hop class with her daughter, granddaughter and great granddaughter. With a twinkle in her eyes and a bounce in her step you couldn't help but feel her special presence. Zena... an unusual name for an unusual woman. Some called her "mom", some called her "grandma", some called her "great grandma" but EVERYONE called her Zena... especially all the great grand kids. We loved her so much... But she always loved us MORE. Zena was preceded in death by her husband Jerome and her parents Sam and Jennie Schwartz. She is survived by her immediate family: daughter Carolyn and Merrill Lamb, daughter Linda and Steve Selig , son Louis Weinkle and Suzanne Myers , son Steven and Laura Weinkle, grandchildren Adam and Lisa Lamb, Karen and Marc Spector, Jackie and Stephen Shapiro, Stacey and David Fisher, Michael Shenk , Spencer and Genevieve Weinkle, Jennie Weinkle, Max and Sam Weinkle, Great-grandchildren Jackson and Macy Lamb, Charlie, Kellie and Sammie Spector, Zach, Ali, Lindsay and Molly Fisher, Aaron and Justin Shenk and Jake, Lexi and Carly Shapiro. Funeral services to be held on Tuesday, August 27. Arrange-ments by Riverside Gordon Kendall. Please call 305-274-0641 for further information.

A love affair like Jerry and Zena's is not the norm. It is the stuff fairy tales are made of. It is unfortunate that I came to know them a little late in life so I don't have enough material, but someone ought to write a book about them - that magical love affair. Those who didn't know them personally would have a tough time believing that the book was accurate, for their love came as close to perfection as I have ever witnessed. The world needs to hear their story. It would give hope to those who have lost all hope in love, affection, dedication, and commitment.

A star has been taken away from us. I know she will be missed terribly. For me, whenever I think of them, all I will do is like up to the heavens, for I know she will be shinning just as bright up there in Jerry's arms. RIP dear Zena.
