James Girdler Obituary

James Everett Girdler passed away peacefully on December 19, 2024, in his home in Emigrant, Montana, at the age of 91. Born on August 28, 1933, in Somerset, Kentucky, James was raised on his family's ranch in Paradise Valley, Montana. He graduated from high school in Livingston, Montana, and went on to live a life filled with hard work, rodeos, horse back riding, motorcycle riding and outdoor adventures

On June 1, 1953, James married Suzanne Blakeslee, beginning a devoted partnership that spanned 70 years until Suzanne's passing. Together they raised three children: Linda Sue, Donald Ray, and Richard James.

James served his country for five years in the Army Reserve, during which time he also embarked on a distinguished 20-year career with the Montana Highway Patrol. During his time with the MHP, he was stationed in Billings, Townsend, and Lewistown. After retiring from law enforcement, James pursued a variety of endeavors including working as a custom home builder, real estate agent, auctioneer, and rancher. On his ranch along the Musselshell River, he raised registered Corriente cattle and cared for his beloved horses.

A man of many passions, James especially loved horses and team roping but he also enjoyed golfing, four-wheeling, riding motorcycles, playing the guitar and spending time outdoors. Known for his big personality and love of socializing-especially at local saloons-James never met a stranger. He cherished evenings spent with friends and family at their home on Six Mile Creek, playing guitars and singing around the fire.

Predeceased by his wife Suzanne and daughter Linda Sue Girdler, James is survived by his sons Donald Ray and Richard James; daughter-in-law Evelyn Carlson Girdler; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

James will be remembered for his zest for life and the joy he brought to those around him. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him. A private memorial service is being planned by the family for the spring of 2025. A headstone for Jim and Suzanne will be placed in the Chico Cemetery this spring for all those friends who would like to pay their respects.
