He was born on July 6, 1960, in Minden, Nebraska, to LaVern and Glenna (Johnson) Zern. He attended Minden Public Schools and graduated from Minden High School with the class of 1979. After High School, Richard joined the United States Navy where he proudly served his country. On December 31, 2015, Richard married Shelley Kaumans. She welcomed his two sons, Joshua and Jacob Zern. In his younger years, he would spend his days in the outdoors, hunting and fishing, or working on his yard. Family was very important to Richard, and he loved getting to spend quality time with his two boys. He also enjoyed spending time with his wife, going out to restaurants and traveling to different lakes across the United States.
Those left to cherish his memory is his wife, Shelley Zern of Overton; his boys, Jacob and Joshua Zern of Norfolk, Nebraska and his brother, Michael (Tracy) Zern of Overton, as well as nieces, nephews, and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, LaVern Zern and Glenna Craig, and his stepfather, John Craig.
There will be no visitation as the family is honoring Richard's wish for cremation.
