COLUMBUS -- Anthony D. Messer passed away peacefully on April 3, 2024 in Columbus, Ohio, beside his wife, and close to family who adored him. He was 72
years old.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Hiram and Nora (Handshoe) Messer, and his siblings, Marvin Messer, Jacqueline Jones, Bobbie Star, and Connie Murphy.
Tony was born in Lima, Ohio, on January 2, 1952. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Linda (Schooler) Messer, married July 3, 1976. He is also survived by his two daughters, Andrea Messer and Emily Welsh, as well as his siblings Gregory Messer, Timothy Messer, Valessa Noone and his son-law David Welsh and grandson Marshall Welsh.
Exuding a quiet confidence, dedicated and hard-working, Tony retired from the Ford Motor Co. after 32 years at the Lima Engine Plant. His decades were in service of something greater than himself, however; he was a devoted husband, father, and the epitome of a loving grandpa. His humility and steadfastness were models for those around him fortunate enough to share in his life. He cherished every moment, as was evident with a framed greeting at their home: "Yesterday's the past, tomorrow's the future, but today is a gift. That's why it's called the present."
Tony was also the recipient of a bilateral lung transplant at the Cleveland Clinic on April 21, 1996. This 28 year-long, life-saving gift was never forgotten or misspent, giving him breath until his final days.
Tony gave back to Lifeline of Ohio with his time, energy, and the worn tread on his running shoes.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, please consider a charitable donation to the Appalachia Service Project (asphome.org) or the Transplant House Cleveland (transplanthouseofcleveland.org) in continuing service of his donor family and the lives they inalterably affected with their generous decision. A celebration of Tony's life and a lunch with friends will be held May 11, 2024 at 1pm at Lauer Farm 800 Roush Road Lima, OH.

Truly sorry to hear of Tony's passing. We were really close friends in Jr. High school (one of the Four Musketeers). Lost touch with him when I moved to another school, but I have thought of him many times throughout the years. Our memories are what shape us into the persons we are today.
My condolences to the Messer family.
