Bruce French Obituary

LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL -- Bruce Comly French, devoted family man, beloved educator, and respected attorney, passed away on July 29, 2025, in Bradenton, Florida.

Born in Yardley, Pennsylvania, Bruce's life was marked by his deep commitment to his family, his faith, the law, and his community. A devout Quaker, Bruce lived by the principles of kindness, humility, and service-values that guided both his personal and professional life.

Bruce earned his bachelor's and master's degree at American University and his Juris Doctor degree at Antioch School of law before beginning a distinguished legal career. He served as legal counsel for the District of Columbia and spent over 30 years as a professor at Ohio Northern University's College of Law, where he inspired generations of students with his passion for justice, gift for teaching, and sharp wit. In recognition of his enduring impact, the local Inns of Court was renamed in his honor: The Bruce Comly French Inns of Court.

He also served as a Bankruptcy Trustee for three decades and maintained a private domestic law practice in Lima, Ohio, where he lived most of his adult life. Known for his boundless generosity and unshakable sense of fairness, Bruce represented countless clients regardless of their means and was always quick to offer advice, a listening ear, or a helping hand.

Bruce had a quick wit and a great sense of humor that put everyone at ease. He had an unmatched ability to make others feel seen, heard, and understood qualities that made him not only a trusted lawyer and professor but also a treasured friend and mentor.

He was a man of many passions, including a profound love for Africa, a continent he visited often and held close to his heart. Whether exploring the world with his sons or sharing quiet moments with a book and his loyal Newfoundland, Hamilton French, Bruce embraced life with wonder, grace, and purpose.

Above all, Bruce cherished his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Diane W. French; his sons, Alexander Comly French and Brandon Clark French; Brandon's wife Amanda; Alexander's fiancée Tesslyn; and his beloved grandchildren, Harper Comly and Kailor Daxton. He is also survived by his sister, Susan French. Bruce was deeply proud that both of his sons followed in his footsteps to become attorneys.

At Bruce's request, a private family service will be held. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. His legacy of compassion, wisdom, humor, and service will live on in the countless lives he touched.

Bruce was a fun and interesting attorney. I learned a lot from him over the years serving as a court reporter in depositions and at ONU Law School when he would have his students present a mock trial. May you grieve him well. He touched many lives in a very positive way.

Bruce was 18 when we met at AU and reminded friends for a lifetime up to a phone chat on his last birthday this year. He took that opportunity to share his joy at the success of Diane, Alex and Brandon, as well as their partners and his grandchildren.

For as long as I knew Bruce I respected him, and profited from his complex and insightful mind. He made any time spent together a pleasure and his presence lit a moral and ethical candle in a world plagued by darkness. He will live on in the memory of those privileged to have known him, as well as those living in a better place because of his impact on those whose lives he touched.

Bruce will be missed and he will live in the lives he touched.

Bruce was such a kind man. I got to know him through Dayton Friends Meeting. He offered help to my wife Connie and I without either of us asking beforehand. If Bruce saw a need, he acted on it! I'm so sorry for his family! We were blessed to know him. His gentle spirit will be greatly missed.

I was a student at ONU and was blessed with having Bruce as a Prof in Civil Procedure. We became friends and played racquetball and had dinner together a few times. A few years later I took the bar and I was confident I aced that part of the exam. (I passed). Bruce kept up with me and we talked many times and exchanged thoughts on some cases. I am one of thousands who were lucky to have been his friend. I am sorry to hear he has passed. My thoughts are with his family.

We came to know Bruce, Alex, and Brandon through Dayton Friends Meeting. We valued Bruce's constant good cheer and his call for social justice for all. A Quaker through and through. Greetings and sympathy to Alex and Brandon. May you live lives that honor your father.

Heartfelt condolences to Alex and Brandon. Your father was a wonderful person. I remember being impressed that Bruce, along with the two of you, would attend Dayton Friends Meeting so regularly even though you lived fairly far away in Lima. He was very friendly and caring. My parents also respected him greatly and always enjoyed talking with him. Know that my family and I are holding you and all of your family in the Light.

Bruce was a mentor, friend, teacher, and a great listener. Bruce was the consummate professional, and he lived the old adage of 'be yourself'. Bruce helped me during a tough time in my life. He didn't have to.
I am sad that you are gone, Bruce, but I know that you have made the world a better place. My condolences to his wonderful family.

There was only one Bruce French! I met him when I worked at ONU College of Law. He had so much energy but always had time for you if you needed to talk. Bruce gave me some great advice during a difficult time in my life and I will never forget that. He was genuine and honest and could make you laugh. Blessings and sympathy to the French family.

I knew Bruce well since 1964 although I always had to ask him to slow down talking so I could understand what he was saying. Perhaps we all would have been better had he been able to achieve his high school ambition of being President of the United State. My sincere condolence to his family. Keep his legacy alive - I promise to always remember him.

Bruce was a great brother-in-law. But before that we were friends at AU. Different fraternities led us in different political paths, but at the end of the day we were always willing to work together. He was my best bridge partner ever and we played a lot our senior year. He won at tennis because he talked his opponent into submission. Too many stories to tell. Rest in peace my friend. God be with you.

I´ve known Bruce most of our lives. He was a super star at Pennsbury Highschool in Yardley, PA and seemed to be friends to all. My husband Ed, now deceased, was one of the lucky guys to be taken under Bruce´s wing throughout high school, their college years and beyond. Bruce was responsible for getting Ed and Me together in 1972 and married in 1974. Bruce´s heart and humor were the glue that kept so many in his life together. His love and legacy will be carried on in the fond memories of all who had the fortune to be in his life.

The French family holds a special place in my heart. I was blessed to be trusted with the care of Alex and Brandon when they were very young. It's been a delight to watch them grow and flourish. That's a true testament to Bruce and Diane. Bruce was truly one of the good guys. My prayers and love are with you during this time of heartbreak.

We loved Bruce´s quick wit and Humor. Tom and Bruce would discuss whether a cup
