JUPITER, Fla. — Edward Raymond Ohns, age 91, passed away on Thursday, July 19, 2018 at Trustbridge Hospice Foundation in Jupiter, Florida. He was born February 5th, 1927 in Bellefontaine, Ohio to the late Lawrence and Catherine (Doyle) Ohns. He served in the US Army, Air Corp during WWII as an AP Engine Mechanic, and afterward, he was a mail carrier for the U.S. Post office for 35 years. On January 2nd, 1950 he was married to Melba Murray, who preceded him in death on July 28, 1998. On October 8, 1999, he married Aileen McLaughlin Donahue, who survives in Richfield, Ohio.
After his service in the military, he was able to restore most broken mechanics, including cars, to their former glory. He enjoyed camaraderie found in his bowling league and relaxation in gardening. He was a former member of St. Gerard's Catholic Church. Later in life, he was an active member of his senior center as well as a shuffleboard enthusiast. He was a devoted husband and father, always working two jobs to provide for his family. He was also a loving grandfather, and great-grandfather, and he tenderly cared for both of his wives in sickness and in health.
Survivors include daughters Maureen (Richard) Cook, Jupiter, FL, Sheila (Michael) McPheron, Spencerville, OH, Monica (Bryan) Kirkpatrick, Palm Bay, FL, and son Edward G. Ohns, Palm Bay, FL; son-in-law, Jeffery Rahrig, Lima; sister-in-law Patricia Rable, Lima; eight grandchildren, Shawn, Mark, Megan, Justin, Timothy, Matthew, Monica, and Taya; eleven great-grandchildren, several step children, step grandchildren, and step great-grandchildren. His step-daughter, Debbie (Dan) Inks, was his caregiver for three years. In addition to his wife Melba, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Catherine Rahrig; a grandson, Andrew, and his siblings, Kathleen Winblad, Tom and John Ohns. He will be sorely missed by all.
A memorial service will be on August 25, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home, 920 N Cable Road, Lima, Ohio. His son-in-law Richard Cook will officiate. The family will greet friends for one hour prior up to time of service. Entombment will be in Gethsemani Mausoleum. Graveside Military Honors will be conducted by VFW Post 1275.
