LIMA -- Ellis Gene Buettner, age 91, passed away at 4:35 p.m. on Tuesday, January 25, 2022, at Mercy Health St. Rita's Medical Center, due to lingering effects of COVID-19.
Gene was born on November 6, 1930 in Delphos, Ohio to Donald C. and Lorene H. (Stirn) Buettner. On February 7, 1954 he married the love of his life, Amelia "Amy" (Hittle) Buettner, who survives in Lima.
Gene was a 1949 graduate of Delphos Jefferson High School, and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict from 1949 to 1953. He then had a long and accomplished career in television and electronic repairs. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he served the congregation in multiple areas. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was an excellent trapshooter.
He is survived by his son, Michael (Tammy) Buettner of Lima; daughter, Susan (John) Stiles of Lima; son, David (Debbie) Buettner of Lima; son, Donald Buettner of Fort Wayne; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; siblings: Thomas (Irma) Buettner of Delphos; Lois Halliwill of Seal Beach, CA; Dorothy Miller of Delphos; Edna (John) Feathers of Powell, WY; and sister-in-law, Carol Buettner of Delphos.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Donald (Anna) Buettner, George (Delores) Buettner, and Richard Buettner; and brothers-in-law: Bob Halliwill, Wayne Metzger, and Gene Miller.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home in Lima, Ohio. Masks are respectfully requested and encouraged. A memorial service will follow at 1:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. John Foster. Burial of ashes will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Honor Flight-Columbus, Ohio Chapter, or the Folds of Honor Foundation.

Mr. and Mrs. Buettner were wonderful neighbors who provided us neighbor kids a great place to come over and play in the best "Southwood" style. They were an outstanding family and wonderful neighbors. The world was a much better place having Mr. Buettner in it.
