Glenn Rioux Obituary

RIOUX, Glenn, 1956 - 2014

Father, husband, brother, uncle and friend, Glenn died last Saturday, following seven grueling months of treatment for acute myeloid leukemia.

In August, thanks to an anonymous donor, Glenn had a bone marrow transplant and all seemed to be going well. We were very hopeful. Then a few weeks later, those new cells started attacking his body, and he never recovered.

Glenn was born and raised in Montreal, and spent most of his life and career there, attending Lower Canada College and McGill University. He worked as chief accounting officer at Alcan, and then left the corporate world for academia to do a PhD in accounting at the John Molson School of Business at Concordia University. He was teaching at UQAM and almost finished revising his thesis when he and the family moved from Montreal West to Toronto in 2013 so he could take a job as Vice-President Standards at CPA Canada.

For many years he was politically active, both during Quebec's two sovereignty referendums and for the provincial N.D.G. Liberal Association. Some of his best stories were from campaigning door-to-door in other, staunchly separatist ridings. He also served on several volunteer boards, including the YMCA and the Montreal Oral School for the Deaf.

While he could get totally passionate about accounting and issues like corporate governance, his true love was his family. He always put them first. His daughters, Sophie and Julianne, and wife, Elisabeth Kalbfuss, cherish the memories of his big, warm heart, his kindness and many elaborately planned family vacations. He never made a promise he didn't try with all his heart to keep. He will also be missed terribly by his brother, Claude, sister-in-law Lina St. Jacques and their two daughters, Kristina (Ilya Kravtchouk) and Kim.

A memorial service is being planned in Montreal on Saturday, October 18 at 4 p.m. at The Unitarian Church of Montreal, 5035 de Maisonneuve Blvd. W.

Throughout his illness, Glenn received many blood and platelet transfusions. In lieu of donations, please consider giving blood as often as you can or being tested as a potential bone marrow donor.

I am so sorry to hear this sad news. May his soul rest in peace . Glenn was my classmate at IMPM Cycle 7 and he was such a nice person and pleasing personality. I met for lunch for the last time 2005 after my graduation ceremony at Montreal and my other classmate Kim and my wife and son were also there at the lunch. I got connected with Glenn through Linkedin again in 2013. His memory is still fresh in my mind and i can not believe that he is no more with us. God bless his family and children.

I had the privilege of guiding Glenn' learning as professor in IMPM and to read his various works. Glenn's works were consistently thoughtful, deep, and very much turned toward improving the work place for his colleagues and employees. I remember of him as a very kind, humble, thoughtful, and caring person, and intellectually gifted. The IMPM community will miss him a lot

I would like to add my condolences to the family. Glenn befriended me at my first AcSOC meeting and I so appreciated his kindness. He knew my brother and sister-in-law Phil and Stephanie and we connected immediately over our Montreal roots! I will miss Glenn and I can clearly remember him talking about "his girls" with a huge twinkle in his eyes!

I am really saddened by Glenn's passing. What a perfect gentleman. He was dignified, friendly, kind, and a true family man. I knew him briefly when he moved from Montreal to Toronto with his family. I assisted him with setting up his banking when he arrived in Toronto, and he took interest in me as a person. We connected almost immediately. Glenn will be missed. My heartfelt condolences to Liz and his two daughters. My prayers are with them.

I was Glenn's first boss at Alcan. And, I absolutely tell you that he was the best and brightest employee I had in all the years I worked in Canada. He was brilliant and could solve problems that others could not do.

My deepest sympathies to you and your daughters for the loss of your husband and their father. He always had a wonderful, positive outlook, especially when talking about his daughters. I enjoyed your involvement at LCC while your daughters were enrolled and how difficult your decision was to make the move to Toronto, as Montreal was home to your family. May strength drawn from your family and the loving memories you will forever have, help you through this difficult process.
