LIMA — Gordon was born August 19, 1951 in Lima, OH, to William and Florence Shaffer, both of whom preceded him in death. On March 23, 2006 he married Kim Shaffer who survives in Lima. He worked at Teledyne Ohio Steel and later Oakwood Correctional Facility, where he eventually retired in 2013 after many years of dedicated service. He also worked at Big R for some time after retirement. He had a strong work ethic and was never known to miss a single day on the job. He lovingly instilled these traits into his children and was filled with pride to see them follow his example. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #370 and Moose Lodge 199.
Gordon loved playing poker, camping, and being in the great outdoors. He was highly active and had an affinity for anything that had to do with water, such as working on aquariums, swimming in his pool, and boating. He loved sweets and had a particular passion for butter pecan ice cream and his wife's famous German chocolate cake. He loved animals and greatly enjoyed going to the zoo to see them, especially the lions. His favorite animal of them all was his beloved dog, Lucky. Walking with Lucky was one of his greatest pleasures. Gordon was quick witted, loved to tease, and had an affinity for nicknames. Every child and grandchild had a special nickname, and if you knew Gordon well, you probably have a nickname of your own. He was the world's biggest fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes, and a life-long fan of the Cleveland Browns. He never missed a Buckeye game, and kept Autumn Saturdays sacred, especially when they were playing that team up north. He also supported local sports throughout his life and jumped at the chance to travel and watch any basketball and football games played by the Lima area school districts. He never missed an opportunity to watch his grandkids compete and had a special place in his heart for the Shawnee and Bath sports programs they participate in. He also particularly enjoyed watching basketball at his Alma Mater, Lima Senior. Above all else, Gordon cherished spending time with his family. His grandkids were his greatest joy and his heart swelled with pride for his children. Gordon was an exceptional man, and will be greatly missed by all those who were fortunate enough to know him.
