Herschell Gordon Lewis Obituary
The Something Weird video website announced his death.
He launched the splatter genre with his movie “Blood Feast” in the 1960s. Many of his movies were shown in drive-in theaters. Some of the films he made include “The Wizard of Gore” and “She-Devils on Wheels.”

He also made many soft-core erotic films.
Besides being a filmmaker, Lewis taught college literature, worked in radio, and produced and directed TV commercials. He wrote several books on marketing and copywriting.
Many filmmakers were inspired by Lewis including John Waters, Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino, and James Gunn.
Gunn took to social media on hearing of the death of Lewis and posted a message on Twitter, saying the filmmaker "changed cinema."

My name is Tina Moore Pfeiffer and I am the daughter of Ben Moore, who was in Moonshine Mountain, Two Thousands Maniacs and Suburban Roulette. I met Mr. Lewis, we had lunch after my father passed away. I bought him lunch to thank him, My dad had such a great time when he was acting. I am an actress at Burt Reynolds Institute for Film and Theatre and I wanted to send my condolences to your family at this time. I think Mr. Lewis was a brilliant man, who was ahead of his time. I read about a half dozen of his books and attended a conference with him in New York. I remember he could quote Yeats at length. Didn't know about all of the gore stuff. He was a direct marketing genius.

I was saddend to see that my favorite director of all time had passed away. There are many who were unaware of his talents and his contributions to the film industry, but with little known actors and tiny budgets, he was a genius. My favorite part of his career would be from 1960 through the early 1970s, where he spun one great after another. Thanks for the memories.

My sympathy goes to the Lewis Family. I remember Herschell well from 1964 and Moonshine Mountain. I am Brenda Kerr Honeycutt, daughter of Harry Kerr and remember what a fine man he was. We visited your family in Chicago many years ago which I remember well. I'm not sure your Mom will remember me but your family gave me such good memories.

Losing a loved one can bring much grief. Please accept my sincere condolences. I love the words spoken in the scripture at 1 Thessalonians 4:14 written by Paul when he was in Corinth "For if we have faith that Jesus died and rose again, so too God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in death through Jesus". What a wonderful promise. To know that you can see your loved one again!
