LIMA — Jerry Lee Redman, age 75, passed away at 9:20 a.m. Wednesday, October 24, 2018, at Lima Memorial Health System.
Jerry was born on August 17, 1943 to Mahlon J. and Helen (Krickenberger) Redman who both preceded him in death.
Jerry was in the first graduating class of Perry High School in 1961, where he played football and was on the student council. He received his Bachelor of Science in Education from The Ohio State University in December, 1966 and loved his Buckeyes sports teams.
After graduating, he became a substitute teacher in the Lima City Schools and Allen County Schools. In March, 1967, he was hired by Shawnee Schools to finish out the school year. In the fall of 1967, he began teaching at Perry Local Schools, where he taught Social Studies for thirty years with Senior Government being his favorite.
Jerry wore many hats while at Perry. He was Head Boys Basketball Coach from 1970 -1973. He also was the Head Girls Basketball Coach from 1980 - 1983. Jerry was the line coach for the high school football team for several years. He was Head Jr. High Football Coach for twenty-one years and coached Jr. High and Ninth Grade basketball for twenty plus years.

Jerry was President of the Perry Education Association for many years and was a delegate to the OEA Convention many times. He was a lifetime member of the OEA and the NEA. Jerry was also a member of the YMCA, the Eagles Aeries #370 and Protect Ohio Pensions.
In the 1980's he performed over 300 volunteer hours at the Crisis Hot Line. In 1991, he won the Educator of the Month Award from the Lima Life Underwriters Association. In 1997, he was awarded the Northwest Ohio Education Association's Local Service Award. Also in 1997, he received the Distinguished Alumni Award for Perry Schools. His favorite reward was being chosen many times as the seniors' favorite teacher.
After he retired in 1997, Jerry continued to be a substitute teacher for 11 years at Perry. He also worked part-time at The Andersons in the beer and wine department for three years.
Jerry was proud of his education, besides his Ohio State Degree, he received his Masters in Administration from the University of Dayton. He earned enough credits to be certified as a school counselor. He also came close to earning another degree in Political Science at Bowling Green State University and the University of Toledo.
Jerry loved teaching and coaching and working with his students and players. He always hoped he made a positive influence in their lives. He loved to be around people and socialize, do crossword puzzles, and read, especially Dean Koontz books.

As stated in my facebook, Mr. Redman is one of my favorite teachers at Perry High School. He was our teacher, advisor, coach, confidante, and best of all... he was our friend. There is not enough space to say all the good things i would like to put. Our hearts are heavy and at the same time our hearts are filled with warmth in remembering all the good times we all shared. Mr. Redman would not want us to cry but to smile and laugh at all the good memories he gave us. Mr. Redman (Jerry), my friend, you will be missed.

To the family and friends of Mr. Redman:
Anyone who could capture the attention of high school students and bring history/government to life deserves high praise! Mr. Redman took great pride in engaging and encouraging students to think outside of themselves and made learning fun and relevant! God bless each of you as you remember a man who touched so many lives in such a positive way.

Jerry was one of a few teachers I've ever had that left a solid bond with learning. We would cross paths now and then and he always struck me as a friend rather than a teacher. RIP Jerry, We will never forget you!
