LIMA -- Matthew Wylie Myers, 48 of Lima, passed away February 21, 2023, at University Hospital - Cleveland, after fighting a long fight with his loving family by his side. Matt was born December 6, 1974 in Lima to Loren and Martha (Sheipline) Myers; his father preceded him in death and his mother survives him in Westminster. On May 23, 1998, he married the love of his life Rebecca (Montgomery) Myers who survives him in Lima.
Matt was a 1993 graduate of Allen East High School and earned his Associate Degree in Fire Science from Columbia Southern University. Matt began his career as a fire fighter in Celina in 1998, where he went on to become a paramedic. He was hired at Shawnee Township Fire Department in 2000, where he held numerous positions. On June 26, 2006, he was promoted to Captain and later, on June 4, 2013, he was promoted to Platoon Chief. Most recently, on June 20, 2018, Matt became the Fire Prevention Officer and Investigator.
He loved teaching his skills and sharing his knowledge in various capacities with the community. Matt worked tirelessly to decrease risk and increase safety within our industries, churches, school and businesses. He made sure that at the end of the day, his highest priority was that everyone went home to their families. The Brotherhood at Shawnee Township Fire Department held a special place in Matt's heart and his unshakeable bond with each and every person there will continue to be felt for years to come.
Matt attended Lima Community Church where he helped with blood pressure checks and he enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting in Iowa with his dogs, Moose, Bear, and Sadie.
He never knew a stranger and everyone loved his company. Matt kept up on all the local sports and he especially enjoyed watching his son play soccer; he was over the moon with the Shawnee Boys Soccer team's latest victory at State.
Most of all, Matt loved his family; he was a true family man who showed his love and dedication every day.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by his children, Breonna (Matt) Green and Joshua-Paul Myers; brother, Fredrick (Lois) Myers; sister, Laurie (Chuck) Dunn; in-laws, Paul and Cheryl Montgomery; sister-in-law, Denise (Jason) Mouser; aunt, Becky Keller; special cousin, Kit (Jim) Wiechart; seven nieces and nephews, four great-nieces and nephews, many cousins and a Godson.
Matt's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the personnel at St. Rita's Medical Center and University Hospital - Cleveland for all of their help and support over these last few trying months. We would also like to thank our family, friends, and community for all of their support, thoughts and prayers.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Sunday, February 26, 2023 at Shawnee Alliance Church, East Campus and again from 11:00 AM until the time of the service on Monday.

Matt was a very special young man. My son Jermey Gerber and he met in 5th grade, which has still been a strong bond for them. Matt would come down to our home as they were young, he was like another son in our home. So sad that he is gone, but I know that he will have fun in the world of God. Prayers and thoughts for all of the family, extended families and friends.
