LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Mr. Melvin "Mel" Foster, age 65, passed from this life on Monday, August 17, 2015 at Barlow Respiratory Hospital in Los Angeles, California.
He was born on April 17, 1950 in Lima, Ohio to the union of Oscar "Sonny" and Laurine Martin Foster; both parents preceded him in death.
Mel graduated from Lima Senior High School in 1968, he was a member of the Lima Senior 1968 basketball team that went to State. He was a 1973 graduate of Central State University with a degree in business marketing. He relocated to Los Angeles where he had resided for almost 40 years. He was known for his tag line "Let's Make Money Together" and became a legend in the mortgage industry. As many still remember his nickname as "Mel Man" as he always delivered. He had recently started his own mortgage banking company along with his daughter Wendy, creating a father, and daughter team "Foster Lending Group" before his untimely death. Mel was an active member at West Angeles Church of God in Christ for 32 years and served as a deacon for 15 years and was voted Deacon of the year in 2014.
He leaves to cherish his memories, strength, and wisdom his three devoted children; Marquette (Ky) Shurelds of San Francisco, CA., Wendy Shurelds Foster of San Diego, CA., and Logan Foster of Los Angeles, CA; four grandchildren; O'Sheena Shurelds, Akiera Shurelds, Dajaan Marks and CinQue Shurelds. An uncle/brother Clarence (C.L.) Martin. 3 aunts/sisters Susie (Eva) Peppers; Carol (Dee Dee) Butler; Linda Kay Dukes; all of Lima, Ohio. 3 bonus step-brothers; Pastor Cleven Jones, Arillus Foster both of Lima, Ohio: Tony Jones of Evanville, IN. 3 bonus step-sisters; Vanessa Adams, Kay Foster Scales, Vonda Foster all of Lima, Ohio and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, co-workers and friends.
He was preceded in death by a stepsister Delores Foster. An uncle/brother Lee Martin Jr.
Home going services will be held on Friday, September 4, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Cleven Jones, officiating.
Visitation/Wake services will be held on Thursday, September 3, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. where the family will be present from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Jones-Clark Funeral Home, Inc.
Interment: Woodlawn Cemetery.
