I forgot to mention that Michael had been attending the Rockford United Methodist Church before the accident which took his life. I urge all church members and Rockford residents to share their memories of Michael.

To the family of Michael Shoemaker:
Michael was an inspiration to all of us in Rockford, whether we knew him well or not. He refused to be confined and defined by his disability. He was seen daily in various places around town. He knew the love and acceptance of everyone, the kind of inclusion we would wish for all people with disabilities, whatever the nature of the disability might be. We all want to be part of our community and he certainly was. The effort and determination he exhibited were remarkable. It is understandable that many would just give up and stay home but not Michael. He just refused to be a prisoner in his own home. He was a priceless treasure ,one of a kind. We deeply feel his loss; life in Rockford will not be the same without him. He was a blessing, if only be being seen. May his memory always remind us of the value of each of our fellow men, regardless of their individual circumstances. The best memorial he could have is for us to love each other unconditionally. His example demonstrated what power really is,not what we may think it is. He left an unforgettable mark on each of us and our entire village.
Our heartfelt wish for the family is that you may know peace and healing.
