Robert Maxwell Obituary

LIMA -- Robert E. Maxwell, age 86, passed away peacefully with family by his side on July 28, 2022. Bob was born in Lima OH, and graduated from Lima South High School before attending The Ohio State University, receiving his BS degree and MD degree in 1962. He did his general surgery residency at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore before entering into military service for two years as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corp. The University of Minnesota accepted him into its neurosurgical residency program, where he subsequently joined their School of Medicine faculty in 1971 and was soon also named Chairman of Neurosurgery at the Minneapolis VA Hospital. His distinguished career touched many lives. Staff and patients admired his talent, integrity, and compassion, and he often spoke about the courage of his patients. In 1993 he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from The Ohio State University, and in 1999 was inducted into the Lima City Schools Hall of Fame. In 2006, he packed up his clubs at Minneapolis Golf Club, retired to Fort Myers, Florida, and spent his final 16 years enjoying the company of his wife Karen, watching his favorite sports, reading, playing piano, and continuing his passion for golf with his many friends at The Club at Gateway.

Bob was preceded in death by parents James Daniel Maxwell and Ida Frances Maxwell (Cox); and the mother of his four children Jana Maxwell (Billiter). He is survived by his wife Karen (Huppert) Maxwell; sister Patricia May; children David (Starr), Laura (Michael) Siegler, James (Bonnie), and Carter (Anissa); grandchildren Drake (Jessica), Alexa (Amar), Molly (Michael), Raina (Andrew), Kylee and Logan; step-grandchildren Megan, Alex, and Nicholas; and niece/nephews Kim, Kirk, Jeffrey, Robin, Teresa, and Patricia.

He will be greatly missed, but wonderful memories of him will go on. Per his wishes, there will not be a service, and family will gather to celebrate his life at a future date.

I would simply like to say that I continue to remember Bob as there are so many memory triggers that brings our times together to mind. Our conversations were always rich and thoughtful. Mickey and I are looking forward to seeing Karen this Fall when back home in Fort Myers.

I met Bob when he joined Gateway Country Club in Fort Myers. We quickly became fast friends as both of us loved the game of golf and we were both alumni of Ohio State. We served together on the club Board of Governors and watched our beloved Buckeyes on numerous occasions. It was my honor to be his friend. I finer more compassionate man I have never known.
