Frederick Maly Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Rick Maly announces his passing on June 26, 2025, at the age of 73. He is survived by his wife, Janet, his 4 children, Chad, Angie (Eric), Sara (Patrick) and Beth (Scott), his 12 grandchildren, Riley, Abby, Katie, Brynn, Carson, Luke, Grant, Lauren, Megan, Tyler, Molly and Camryn; brothers Don & Mike, sisters Marlene & Kathy, and many nieces and nephews and friends whom he shared many laughs with. Rick always had a bit of a crazy streak to go along with his big heart. Rick was one of many kindred souls in the great Purcell class of '69. Rick was a proud Marine, enlisting during Vietnam in 1969, serving till 1973. After serving his country, he entered the fire service in the CFD Recruit class of 1975. Rick was a dedicated firefighter for 25 years and loved the fire department. In the CFD, Rick was promoted to the rank of Driver, Lieutenant, and up to Captain. As Captain of Engine 32, he became a great leader and mentor. It has been said, "He was the hardest-working, most duty-bound individual I've ever known." He would literally walk through fire for friends, family, and even folks he did not know. Rick is a 1994 Ohio Valor Award recipient and received a Medal of Honor for his heroic actions as a firefighter. In 2000, Rick retired from the Cincinnati Fire Department, where he served with honor and distinction, risking his life many times, and his body bore the scars as testament to his dedication. He worked his days off from the fire department, welding, steel fabrication, and erection. He did it for the love of his family to provide them with a good life. He played as hard as he worked, and he worked HARD! He had great adventures. The years of toil and fun took their toll, however, and he suffered from Alzheimer's in his later years. We will remember him as a good man and a great father to his children. Celebrate his life and remember that he is off on his next adventure, or 10th life as he lived through the 9 he was given here on earth, and I am sure he will have a good story about that when we meet again. Rest in Peace, Rick, you certainly deserve it! Please join us for the Celebration of Rick's Life on Saturday, July 19, from 12 pm- 5 pm at Gilligan's Brewery, 400 Wyoming Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45215. For those who would like to join, a catholic mass will be held just prior, starting at 11 am, St. James of the Valley Catholic Church, 411 Springfield Pike, Wyoming, OH 45215. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Cincinnati Fire Department Memorial in Rick's name at cincinnatifirefoundation.org To share a memory of Frederick or leave a special message for the Maly family, please click the "Tribute Wall" tab above and to the right, enter the information, and click "Save Post." I was in the Marines with Rick and Jack (Jimmerson) from 1971-73, (VMFA 314 & VMFA 531). As I write this 50 (+) years later, the memories come flooding back about the MANY zany adventures and experiences we shared all over the world, (just ask Jack!!). Never a dull moment when you were around Rick. NOTHING escaped scrutiny and NOTHING was immune from being made fun of, (and it was usually YOU!). When the crazy train left the station, Rick was the engineer!! He was a true buddy and friend. We kept in contact over the years and enjoyed commiserating on those past adventures , and our growing families. From our conversations, I never knew he had alzheimers and he freely admitted he had memory issues from past injuries. He was a true friend!! I will miss him greatly and loved him like a brother.

Heart felt condolences to the Maly family. I met Capt Maly when he was a Welder and I was selling firewood and I needed a more heavy duty log splitter. Man, Cap welded me wings on that thing increased my torque just straight " pimped it out " !. At the time, I didn't know he was a Firefighter and he didn't know I was a Fire dispatcher. After that, we been GOOD ever since !! God Bless him and his family.

As a fairly new firefighter, I couldn't believe I was able to transfer onto Engine 32 with "The" Captain Maly. Truly an honor to learn firefighting and work ethic from someone so admired. Never a day went by that I wasn't looking forward to one of Rick's infamous stories. Rest in peace Cap.

Worked with Rick in late 70's when I was traveling Lt. In old district 4. Rick gave me a Marine Corp flag for my 50th birthday (which I still have). We became great friends over the years. Semper Fi brother. REST IN PEACE.

I met Rick while on the Fire Department and found out we had many common interests we were both in the Marine Corp, love to ride motorcycles, and target practice at my gun club.
He will be missed by many. RIP Brother Semper Fi

I just want the family to know that my thoughts and prayers are with you. Rick was very kind to me when I transferred to Truck 4 and he was always willing to share his knowledge and experience with me as a young firefighter and that benefited me throughout my career. May the family be comforted knowing that so many loved Rick.

Rick´s Obituary says it all perfectly. He was a great leader and mentor. Just being around him at the firehouse or on an emergency scene, he brought out the best(and when needed, the worst) in people. He wanted those around him to be the best at firefighting. It was an honor to have worked with him. It is also a blessing to see how his Son, Chad, has carried on his tradition of hard work, dedication and service to Country and Company.

Rick was more then just a cousin. We grew up together on the same street and played together for most of our lives. I never had a brother, but Rick and his brothers Mike and Don were as close as I came. I loved Rick with all my heart. He was a great family man and truly loved all his kids. Love and miss you Rick.
