James Edwards McGlothin, fondly called "Sonny," was born on August 17, 1941, to the late Helen Neadham and Aaron McGlothin in Meridian, Mississippi. He entered into his eternal rest on May 6, 2025.
Sonny was an incredible family man who was educated in Cincinnati Public Schools. He attended Stowe Elementary, Porter Junior High School, and Taft High School within the Cincinnati Public School District. Sonny was always on a quest for knowledge. He loved to have books around him, and he really loved Math. Not only was it his desire to learn more, but it was also important for him that his children were graduates of CPS. He loved to share what he learned, and the local news was always on at the family home, which is affectionately called "The Brown House". He was aware of local and national events, and you could expect a call from him to encourage you to turn on the news so that you were informed as well.
Sonny retired from General Motors in April 1999 as an Assembly Line Worker. His journey began in November 1967 in Norwood, Ohio. After the Norwood plant closed in August of 1987, he traveled to the GM Dayton/Moraine Plant until 1999. At General Motors, he worked alongside many childhood friends, and while there, he made many life-long friends. Sonny had a passion for cars, whether he was working on them or learning about new GMC models that were coming out.
Sonny loved music, roller-skating, and playing pool. He was an entrepreneur. In 1973, he opened up Jim Jim's Record Store. The store was located on Linn Street and Armory Avenue (Currently Derrick Turnbow) in the West End. His favorite place to eat was "Heavy's" in the West End. On Sunday evenings, Sonny enjoyed skating at the Royals Skating Rink (Walnut Hills) or USA Skating Rink (Tri County). He enjoyed hanging out at the local pool hall on 15th Street in Over The Rhine.
Sonny was an avid photographer, and if you were around when he had his camera out, you probably had your picture taken by him. He loved capturing pictures of his family, friends, and children's neighborhood friends. Those pictures are now cherished as amazing memories.
Twenty years ago, Sonny was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He researched changing his diet, and under his doctors' care, he fought daily to live for his family. He was an inspiration to everyone as he courageously fought this battle.
