Alcyon Weybret

Alcyon Weybret, 87, of Lodi, a former newspaper reporter and homemaker, died Oct. 19 at a local nursing home after lingering illnesses.
She was born Alcyon Martia Carlson on Feb. 21, 1926 in Los Angeles. She graduated from University High School in Los Angeles in 1944. She attended the University of Montana in Missoula where she was a member of Delta Gamma sorority. She graduated in 1948 with a degree in journalism. During World War II she worked as a riveter for the Douglas Aircraft Company in Southern California.
After graduation she was a reporter at a Montana newspaper and then reported for the Salinas Californian. While there, she met her future husband, Fred Weybret. They were married on Dec. 31, 1950 in Del Monte, Calif. They moved to LaGrande, Ore., where Fred was owner and publisher of the LaGrande Evening Observer. Their two children were born there.
The couple acquired the Daily Press in Paso Robles, Calif. and moved there in 1954. They sold the two papers and moved to Lodi after acquiring the Lodi News-Sentinel in 1959.
Alcyon was active with the Lodi Memorial Hospital Auxiliary's Emperor Group, the Lodi Woman's Club and the Lodi Art Center.
She loved reading and was a constant patron of the Lodi Public Library. She enjoyed painting; she and Fred enjoyed camping in the mountains of California. They travelled widely including trips to China, Tibet, South America, Australia, Europe and a two-week trip by pickup truck to Baja California in 1964, just before modern roads and hotels were built.
She is survived by Fred her husband of nearly 63 years. Other survivors are her son, Marty Weybret, daughter-in-law Christi Kennedy Weybret, and son Jim Weybret all of Lodi; and her four grandchildren, Rob Weybret of Lodi; Kate Weybret of London, England; Mike Weybret of Los Angeles; and Juliet Weybret of Los Angeles.
A private service is under the direction of Donahue Funeral Home.
