Dan went to be with his Lord and Savior, Sunday, September 28, 2014.
He was born on November 1, 1950, (All Saints' Day) in Lodi, California, to Calvin and Marguerite (Stark) Mettler (he was Cap and Mag's son). Dan was raised east of Lodi on his parent's farm – they were grape growers. He was active in 4-H, trained in gun safety, and was an athlete as his father had been. A quiet leader, he was often chosen captain of whatever team he was on.
Dan was a graduate of Lodi High School (class of '69) where he played football and baseball for the Lodi Flames. His favorite coach was Fred George who taught him much. Coach George not only took a very special interest in Dan developing into a catcher, he instilled in him the importance of being a leader. Thank you, Coach George. Dan went on to play baseball for the Humboldt State Lumberjacks and graduated from college in 1973. When he and Miriam returned to Lodi in 1973, Dan enjoyed 10 full, active years farming with his father. During this time, he was also a devoted and courageous fire fighter for the Mokelumne Fire Department out of Victor. Dan and his closest friend, Ron Mayer, started a side business called M&M pavement striping. They had a lot of fun with that endeavor. Unfortunately, when Dan and his family moved into town (Lodi), he had to relinquish his status with the fire department, say good-bye to his fun job with Ron, and also with farming. It was time well-served.
Dan spent the next two and half decades in the home building industry. In 2007, he felt enriched and complete when his son-in-law, JJ Godi, drew him into his business world. This brought Dan much happiness and satisfaction. We are sincerely grateful for this healthy time.
Playing hardball in the hot August heat with his fellow Giants Fantasy Campers was something he enjoyed for over two decades. He also had a wonderful group of camping buddies with whom he enjoyed the outdoors for many years (Ramsey and Snyder's Ranch). Silver Lake with Norm Parkin was always a favorite place for Dan to rejuvenate himself.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Miriam (Mimi) Leighton Mettler, and their three children; Marisa (James J.) Godi of Lodi, Brandon D. Mettler of Austin, Texas, and Colleen (Mike) Merritt of Lodi. Dan is also survived by his two beloved grandchildren Dominic James Godi, nine years old, and Mia Nadine Godi, six years old. Dan took great joy in spending time with both of them. He was privileged to coach Dominic in baseball. We know Dominic will remember his Grampa (aka Coach Dan). He also enjoyed his Sunday morning breakfasts at Coco's with Dom. Dan and Mia had a devoted relationship which included creating quiz shows, building castles, and coloring - she will always have him in her heart.
Dan is also survived by his sisters, Carolyn (John) Collins of Reno and Janice (Randy) Luiz of Lodi, his brother, William (Tenna) Mettler of Herald, his sister-in-law Kathryn Leighton of Sausalito, and his brother-in- law Robert (Charlotte) Leighton of St. Helena. His nieces and nephews include Jennifer Collins (Ron) Harvey, Scott (Julie Christy) Luiz, Elizabeth Collins (Patrick) Stewart, Matthew (Krisey Girard) Luiz, Jason (Lindsay) Collins, Jodi Leighton, Kimberly Leighton (Damon) Carter, and Robert (Jane Clay) Leighton, plus numerous great nieces and nephews.
Dan's favorite charity was Feed the Children at FeedTheChildren.org. However, donations to your favorite charity are most appreciated.
Dan's family would like to thank Donahue Funeral home for their care. A celebration of Dan's life is being planned and will be announced at a further date.

Hello Miriam: I live in Sacramento now, but recently learned of Danny's passing. We went through school together from 1st through 8th grade, often sitting next to each other because we were seated alphabetically, as I was "Nies" and he was "Mettler". Danny was always so kind and thoughtful and I was reminded of that when I saw him at the last Victor School reunion. You two were a great couple. My thoughts go with you.

Dear Miriam and family,
We just return home from a week and a half baby sitting request, by our son Scott and daughter -in-law Lara.. We were saddened to hear and read of Danny's passing as he was always one of our favorite people and ball player in our Comet Baseball years (1965-66). A super young man and player, and equally a well establish adult and caring person. We are blessed with his time spent with us all and the wonderful memories of those years. God bless Dan, you and your family! Yours, Ron and Susan Williamson

Dear Mettler Family
The more enriched a person makes our lives, the harder it is for us to let them go. For this reason, I know that saying goodbye to Dan will be the hardest sorrow to bear. I hope that the wonderful memories you have of Dan as well as the love and friendship you have around you, will support you through this time and help you to smile once more.

I am so shocked and sorry to hear about the passing of "Danny". He was always such a pillar of strength to me both on and off the baseball field. He took me under his "wing" as freshman while on the Lodi High baseball team and always encouraged me to be successful. Both he and Miriam always exhibited such happiness and warmth whenever I was in their presence. I will always cherish my memories of him giving me rides in his GTO and making me feel like part of his and Miriam's family. I am truly honored that I could call myself a teammate and friend of his. My heart goes out to Miriam and the rest of the Mettler family . He will be truly missed but never forgotten.

Miriam, Carolyn, Jan, Bill and families,
I first met Dan in the fall of 1961 when I made my first visit to the Mettler home during college. I occasionally would cross his path in the years that have followed. He had a way of always making me smile. I was so saddened to learn of his passing. I know that your faith, memories & family will help all of you through this extremely difficult time. Hugs and prayers.

He will always be Danny to me as we called him all those years at Alpine, then Victor, then Lodi High. Many wonderful Christmases at Cap and Mags and Easter egg hunts were enjoyed with our families. I didn't get to see much of him as an adult but would run into the family occasionally and it was great to catch up and talk about our families. Danny was a kind and caring man, loving father and good heart. I'm sending prayers to Miriam, Jan, Bill and Carolyn and all the family and know he's loving his reunion with Cap and Mag.

There is only one Path that a Man wishes never to take...that is the one that leads him away from his family and friends. We all come to forks in the roads of our lives, some we take others necessarily we do not. Dan took the road well traveled. The only good thing that we can see is that he will be waiting at the side of the Path where our Roads converge. Then we will be happy again. Danny was one of the Good Guys at Lodi, never judgmental, always happy, kind, Honorable, friendly and helpful. As did most, we did not see much of each other...but what I remember is the importance. Dan was his Word. Thank you for letting me be your friend. My Family Condolences!

Dear Miriam, Jan and all the Mettler family,
Dan was one of my favorite people. He and his Dad were always such supportive fans of our softball team. He was a role model to many, a wonderful Son, Brother,Husband,Father, Uncle, Grandpa and Friend. He was an instructor, a coach a mentor, a gentle man. He's gone too soon but what a wonderful legacy he has left here on earth. Live each day with Dan in your heart and the world will be a better place.

With deepest sympathy,
Jeanette and Craig Dillingham

My family and I were privileged to get acquainted, and become friends with Dan through his alacrity to serve and coach baseball for the youth. He loved helping the kids, and especially spending time with Dominique. I was shocked by the news, but quickly relieved because he was a man that served people and family first and left a legacy of love and memories that will serve well through the hard times of missing him.
Our prayers that his surviving family have peace each day, and that the Lord give you smiles on your face, and an incandescent love that will light up your family and friends in your life.
