Grant Mitchell Obituary

Grant Mitchell, longtime resident of Lodi, passed away in Orangevale, CA, on March 12, 2015, at the age of 97. His wife, Angelica, preceded him in death in 2012. He is survived by his daughters, Holly Barrick of Gold River, CA, and Mimi Kover of El Dorado Hills, CA, his two sisters, Donna Heckenlaible and Marylee Levey, as well as three grandchildren (Olivia Barrick, Peter Barrick, and Grayson Kover) and one great-grandchild (Isabella Barrick). He also leaves two nieces and a nephew (Sandra Mitchell, Sally Sundsten, and Barry Mitchell).
Grant was born on November 6, 1917, in Wing, North Dakota, a place he lovingly referred to as "The Old Country." The family moved to Lodi in 1920 where he attended local schools including Lodi High School where he played in the band and on the championship football team before graduating in 1936. He also earned the rank of Eagle Scout. In 1941, he graduated from UC Berkley with a degree in Forestry. During WWII, Grant was an Army Air Corps weather forecaster stationed at McClellan Air Field, and while stationed there, he began corresponding with Angelica Fanos, also from Lodi. They were married in 1944 at Bethel Open Bible Church and celebrated 68 years of marriage before she passed.
After the war, Grant spent most of his career working with his twin brother, Woodrow, for their dad, Boyd, at what became Mitchell & Koenig, the Chrysler/Plymouth dealership on Lockeford St. in Lodi. Later, he worked at Pacific Welding Supply and as the church administrator at Bethel Open Bible Church where he and Angie had been members for most of their lives. In retirement, they moved to Murphys for a few years, but then spent the next two decades in Gold River near their daughters. It was here that he and Angie became members of Redeemer Covenant Church in Orangevale.
Always active outside of work, Grant was Sunday School Superintendent at Bethel Church for 25 years, a member of the Youth for Christ board, the candy chairperson for the Camp Fire Girls for which he was dubbed "Candy Daddy," involved in Christian Business Men's Committee, the PTA, and on the high school reunion committee for his class. At Redeemer Covenant, he could be found painting, ushering, raking leaves, and involved in the men's breakfast on Saturday.
Almost five years ago, he and Angie moved to Almond Avenue Residence Club in Orangevale where his favorite daily activity included exercising, mostly from a chair, to Rock and Roll music. The AARC staff lovingly cared for both of them as did Bristol Hospice during the last few weeks of each of their lives.
A Celebration of Grant's Life will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2015, at 1:00 pm at First Covenant Church of Sacramento, 10933 Progress Court, Rancho Cordova, CA 95670. If you desire, donations can be made to Redeemer Covenant Church, 6800 Main Ave., Orangevale, CA 95662, or to a charity of your choice.

Well my friend, it was time to say good-bye. Thank you for waiting as long as you did. We spent some wonderful times together, most of them sitting next to one another, either in your room at the Residence Club or in the car on the way to church. You touched my life in a wonderful way. Your closeness to our Lord, your love of family, and your friendship to me has meant so much. We talked a lot, we laughed a lot, and we even cried. My tears now are from joy; joy that I knew you, joy that you are now with Jesus, and joy because I will see you again. I miss you Grant.

After reminiscing with Holly this past week, I thought I knew everything about Grant Mitchell, but people have been coming out of the woodwork, sharing beautiful stories of events I did not know about but matching perfectly with what I know. I have only one thing to add...That's my daddy!

I barely knew Grant, but I really appreciate all Holly has told me, and the way he cared for his wife before she went HOME. Glad they are both together in Heaven...Our prayers are with you.

Grant, and Angie, were mentors to everyone they met. By only being themselves, they inspired others to love more, respect more, serve more. The entire Sermon On the Mount can be summed up in two words; Grant, Angie. We are so thankful they were part of our lives.

Grant was without a doubt Mr Redeemer Covenant Church. We was the best at welcoming new people and he did not forget them. Always a warm hello and a firm hand to shake. In his years without Angie, Mike would pick him up and bring him to church and he was still as sharp as a tack. He will be missed by all of us at Redeemer.

Grant was like a second dad to me after my own Dad passed...his voice on the phone always recognizable and he wondered how I knew it was him!! His warm friendship is dearly missed..full of wonderful memories. Love you Holly & Mimi.

Holly and Mimi, my thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of sorrow. Your father was the reason I was able to attend church, not just Sunday mornings but Wednesday evenings also. Many times he would stop at Dairy Queen and buy us each an ice cream cone. His kindness will never be forgotten. Holly, even though I was just an annoying kid back then I always remembered how kind you were to me the few times I had been at your house and the times you gave me a ride to church on Wednesday. In appreciation I named my first daughter Holly. God Bless you and your families.

We knew Grant and Angie through their daughter Mimi who was one of two quality daughters. Over the years we always enjoyed seeing them. Grant was a tireless worker, and I remember his photo albums meticulously labeled and full of pictures of family and friends. We will look forward to a reunion in heaven in the future. Praise God for a blessed eternity for Grant.

All my life we knew my Uncle Grant as a man of tireless energy and optimism and a fierce competitor in family croquet games, Easter egg hunts and spirited games of Pit on Christmas Day. His dedication to his church created opportunities that simply would not have been there without his efforts. He could paint professional signs freehand and his hand-crafted Christmas tableaux lit up his neighborhood. But he was so self-effacing I never knew what a fine artist he was until I saw the drawings he'd done in the last two years of his life. He simply dismissed any and all compliments with a snort and just carried on. My last best memory of him: when his nieces and nephew came to visit him last month and he declined to take a rest so long as we were still there sharing memories and family stories. We will miss him.

I love this picture of Grant! This is just how I remember him--busy, involved, always with a purpose--but always time to give all the 'girls' a bad time!! Your parents were so special! I'll read this to Mom tomorrow--she also has such fond memories of Grant, Angie and Bethel!! Love to all of you!

I have fond memories of Grant driving the Sunday School bus for Bethel. If not for Grant, I would not have been able to attend church. He and Angie were wonderful, kind people that played an important role in my young life. Although I had not seen either for many years, they were never forgotten. May your memories of this wonderful man bring you peace. Marie Mittie
