Hugh Jory Obituary

Hugh Ward Jory, 86, of Stockton, California, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. Born in 1938 to David and Evelyn Jory, Hugh was a fourth generation Californian who left an unforgettable mark on his family, friends, and community.
A proud alumnus of Lodi High School, class of 1955, Hugh continued his education at Stockton College, UC Davis, and San Francisco State. For over four decades, he worked as a pest control advisor for John Taylor Fertilizer, a role that allowed him to share his expertise and passion for the field he cherished.
Hugh's zest for life extended beyond his professional achievements. An avid reader, he was constantly exploring new ideas and stories. He also had a deep love for adventure and the outdoors. From riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycles on scenic road trips to backpacking in nature, he embraced every opportunity to experience the world around him. In his mid-twenties, he earned his pilot's license and went on to obtain his instrument rating, owning several planes over the years. In his 40s, he added scuba diving to his list of hobbies, discovering yet another way to connect with the natural world. He lived on North Lake the last 10 years, where he enjoyed daily kayaking and bike riding. He was deeply involved in Alcoholics Anonymous, achieving nearly 53 years of sobriety and helping many others in their sobriety journey.
After retiring, Hugh and his wife, Janet, embarked on global adventures, visiting destinations including Russia, China, the Amazon River, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, England, Italy, Amsterdam, Spain, Tahiti, Norway and Hawaii. Together, they enjoyed nearly 40 cruises, each trip adding new memories to their remarkable journey through life.
Hugh is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Janet Wegsteen Jory; his daughter, Julie (Mike) Davis; his son, Ward (Sherri) Jory; grandchildren Justin (Stephanie) Sotelo, Jonathan (Colleen) Sotelo, Ashlyn (Austin) Mitchell, Kristen (Joseph) Hughes, Ethan (Morgan) Jory, and Corbin Jory; and great-grandchildren Maisyn and Rylee Sotelo, Eleanor and Douglas Sotelo, and Charlie, Cooper, Amelia, and Henley Jory. He is also survived by his brother, Mark Jory. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Evelyn Jory, and his brothers, Pete and twin brother Allan.
Hugh will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, intellectual curiosity, and love for family. His presence will be dearly missed, yet his legacy will live on through the memories shared by all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Hugh Jory can be made to the charity of your choice or San Joaquin County Historical Museum. Hugh's celebration of life will be held on January 11, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the Lodi Women's Club, 325 W. Pine St, Lodi.

MISS MY COHORT IN OUR COOKING EXPERIENCES. LOVED THIS MAN. HE WAS MY NEIGHBOR HERE ON NORTHLAKE. I LOVED SEEING HIM CANOEING THE LAKE AND KIBBUTZING WITH NEIGHBORS AT PARTIES. I MISS HIM AND I SEND HIM ETERNAL BLESSINGS AND LOVE. AND, TO THE FAMILY, I WILL HOLD YOU ALL IN DAILY PRAYER.
