Ivan Hayes Obituary

Ivan "Doc" Hayes died unexpectedly on August 12, 2011 – the day that would have been his father's 100th birthday.  He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family.
Born Sept. 22, 1936, in Pekin, IL, to Ivan and Fern Hayes, Buddy helped supplement his family's income during his childhood as a paperboy, theater usher, shoe shiner, pin setter at the local bowling alley, and a golf caddy.  He also detasseled corn, shoveled snow, milked cows, and picked fruit.  Buddy graduated from Pekin High School in 1954 where he was on the wrestling, cross-country, and boxing teams. He joined the US Marine Corp during the Korean conflict at age 17 by convincing his mother to sign the enlistment papers.
In 1956, Buddy married his best friend and love of his life, Judy Paschal.  In 1960, he graduated from Palmer Chiropractic College in Davenport, Iowa and they settled in Lodi.  Doc was on the forefront of Sports Chiropractic as the first Chiropractor for the San Francisco Giants.  He also went on to treat Heavyweight Boxing Champions Sonny Liston and George Foreman.  Doc founded Hayes Chiropractic in 1961, which continues to serve the Lodi, Stockton, and Galt communities.
Doc was, first and foremost, a devoted family man. He was also a healer, a proud American and a Marine.   In addition, he was a Mason, Shriner, and Paul Harris Fellow Rotarian.  Doc was a founding member of the Chiropractic Knights of the Roundtable, Life Sponsor of Ducks Unlimited, Life Member of the California Waterfowl Association, and Veterans of Foreign Wars, and member of Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Woodbridge Elk's Lodge, California Chiropractic Association, and Woodbridge Golf & Country Club.
An avid outdoorsman, and passionate duck hunter and fisherman, Doc will be remembered for his generosity, hospitality, and unwavering positive attitude.  His greatest joy was to spend time with Judy, his family, and friends at "The Barn" – his "little bit of heaven."
Doc's absence leaves a profound void for all who knew him. His family and friends will be sustained by his legacy and countless cherished memories.
He was preceded in death by his parents Fern and Ivan Hayes, in-laws Francis and Glendora Paschal, and infant daughter Lori Juliene.
Doc is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Judy Hayes; sisters Shirley Leslie (and husband Dwayne) and Sharon Hayes; the pride and joy of his life, his children, Lyn and Doug Gerard, Misty and Jim Sturman, Shawn and Cindy Hayes, James and Mattie Hayes, and Michael and Tracey Hayes; adored grandchildren James Gerard, Josh and Lauren Sturman, Melissa and Mark Massa, Leslie Gerard, Christopher, Chad, Hannah, Hunter, Jake, Grace, and Taylor Hayes; great granddaughter Macie Massa; and lifelong friends Tony and Jayne Shaw.
Friends are invited to celebrate Doc's life on Saturday, August 20 at noon at The Barn.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army, Life Chiropractic College, or Shiners Hospital.  Semper Fi.

Dearest Judy & Family....I was so sorry to hear that Buddy had passed away. What a shock. When you think about someone like Bud who was so full of life and energy you just assume that some how they will live forever. God called him home way to early Judy. I feel that in a lot of ways you and your family have been in my life for almost all of my life. Buddy was my mom & dad's Chiropractor when he was still on Garfield St. and I was still a little girl. Then I babysat for Lynn & Shawn when you lived on Olive Ct. until I was old enough to work at Hayes Chiropractic Office & then on to J. & B. Rentals. Where does the time go? I love you guys so much and I'm so sorry I won't be able to join you at the "Barn" tomorrow, but please know that you will be in my heart and on my mind. Love Always - Judi Archuleta

To the Hayes',

My heart is hurting to know that Doc has passed. I recall many moments in the office to where he gave me advice and though I was not ready to receive it at the moment, I have valued and applied as I moved into my education profession. "What the mind can conceive, the mind can achieve" is a motto that I have had in my classroom as I educate our future. My heart goes out to you and thank you for allowing me to be a part of his life. He was an absolute bundle of energy and kept me on my toes. With all my love, Jamie Hughes

Please accept my deepest sympathy at Doc Hayes passing. He and my father were friends...and the only chiropractor my dad would ever go to. It also helped his office was just down the road from our house on Ham Lane. One summer I recall Dad visiting him two or three times in a day...because he was re-shingling our house and kept throwing his knee out. I think Doc Hayes gave him a special deal because he was such a frequent customer that summer! I also know that anytime any of us kids did something noteworthy for the newspaper, Doc Hayes would laminate it and send it to us as a keepsake (which I still have). A wonderful man who will be truly missed.

Bud brightened everyone's day who came in contact with him; and I'm sure you brightened all his. The two of you raised a beautiful family. I'm sure they will help you through this most difficult time.

Fondly, and old friend

It is with deep sympathy we express our thoughts at this this time of sadness of your loss of Buddy, and may we wish you peace during this difficult time.
We have known the Hayes family since 1963 when we moved from SLC to Lodi. Both Bud and Judy were our most cherished friends. Memories of our good times together will be in our mind's eye for ever. The wondeful fish fry's or boating on the Delta brings back such wonderful memories. What a great man, such a "people" person with so much personality. He loved people and people could feel his radiation towards them. His presence was always known when he would enter a room as he made everyone feel so comfortable. What a wonderful human being

With deep sympathy to the entire Hayes family. I have such wonderful memories of our good times together since we first met Bud, Judy and family in 1963. Words alone cannot due justice for Buddy. He was such a wonderful, caring human being put on this earth to do what he did best. People, he loved so much, and people respected him so much as he showed so much dedication to each and every one who came in contact with him. When he entered a room he was the center of attention, as everyone just loved him, and yes, he did have alot to say.. Although, I left Lodi years ago, Bud, Judy and Family will remain in my heart forever .All the fish fry's and boating on the Delta will never be forgotten. We all are wishing each of you peace during this difficult time. You all are very special people, and I am so glad that we have had the opportunity to share our lives with your family Love, Nancy Hilton, Tammi Cluck and Bobby Pelton

My heart hurts for your entire family. I have such fond memories of Buddy Hayes readying the big white car for our tennis trips out of town for the Super Sr. tennis matches. The car was always sparkling clean and a new bottle of water in each cup holder. His presence at the tennis luncheon get togethers in the "Barn" was fun. We will all miss him.
