Joe Metcalf Obituary

Your chair is empty. Our hearts are broken open. We will miss you immensely as you have made our lives wonderful by your deep and unconditional love for us. We will miss you terribly but are glad you are now at peace.
Joe was born to John Elvis and Maude Lenore (Adams) Metcalf. He spent the first 8 years of his life in Poteau, Oklahoma along with his seven siblings, W.C., James, Helen, Bud, Elizabeth, Jack and Arnie. After the death of his mother in 1939, he moved with his family to California where he lived for the remainder of his life.
As a young man and into adulthood, he made quite a name for himself in sports. He played high school basketball and then later on enjoyed playing softball, tennis and rec basketball.
Joe met and fell in love with Sharon Marlene Wagner. They married on December 29, 1951. Shortly after, Joe joined the Navy serving in the Korean War. After returning from the war, Joe worked with his father and mother-in-law, Ted and Edna Wagner, at T&E Market, a local landmark which many Lodians remember as a place to hang out, play pinball and buy candy.
"Joey" and "Sherry", as they called one another, lived across the street from T&E and eventually had four children, Michael (born 1956), Scott (born 1958), Cory (born 1959) and Barry (born 1966).
Over the years, Joe's home was open to all and all were welcomed with a generous and giving spirit. He was an amazing host and so often put others needs before his own.
In his retirement years, Joe enjoyed gardening, watching sports and "Judge" shows on television but most of all enjoyed being with his family and friends and seeing his grandchildren grow and thrive.
Joe is survived by his wife, Sharon. His son, Michael & wife Brenda. His son Scott. His son Barry & wife Syndel. His daughter Cory & husband John. His grandchildren, Casey, Cameron, Molly, Chloe, Riley, Kendra, Jenise, Brandon, Vanessa and Tara. His brothers Jack and Arnie. His sister Helen. He also leaves behind many more loved ones including in-laws, nieces, nephews, many "adopted" family members and friends.
A most heartfelt and extra-special thank you to Scott Metcalf for his deep devotion and  loving care he so beautifully and selflessly gave to Dad in his final weeks, days, hours. It was a gift to us all but mostly to dad who trusted him and rested in his loving arms.
Thank you to everyone for your presence, support and kindness as we journeyed through this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Hospice of San Joaquin. We thank them for their kindness, their generous support and guidance.
"If there ever comes a day when we can't be together keep me in your heart, I'll stay there forever."

We will have an open house celebration of life at the Metcalf home (12376 N. Lower Sacramento Road) on Saturday, November 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Please join us so we can support one another and share our memories of Joe's life. We will be putting together a memory book and would appreciate written memories and pictures for those who wish to bring them.

Joe, all of your family and friends miss that smile. My fondest memory was when we cut the big pine tree so the pool could go in. We cut it 8' off the ground so Brian Kroll could chain saw a chair. We'll we cut it, it fell, and ripped the cedar tree's limbs off on the way down, but stayed up on the stump. You went and got the tractor, I wrapped the 3' diameter tree with a rope pulling from the top to roll it off the stump, and hooked it up to a chain to the tractor. You got on it and smoked the tires, but the tree fell perfect. Tractor tire marks are still there on the brick i'm sure. Then I cut it up into small pieces and Scott hauled it away. We had a blast!

Our prayers go out to all of you. We will remember those good times and laughs we had at the ol' T & E Market. Joe and Sharon watched us Senecals grow up and we will all have fond memories of jumpin' the fence to go to the local grocery. May you be comforted during this difficult time. We are sorry we are unable to attend the memorial for Joe. Dad is living with us now, and at 88 still remembers sending us to the store! God bless you all. With our deepest sympathy, The Senecal family

Joe was an Icon in our Family!
Through all the years at T&E , there were daily visits from my kids! Me stopping on my way to work to buy some lunch and BS...The Friendship & Memories are Life Lasting! For years when we would run into each other somewhere in town it was like a day had not passed~ He was one of the Greats! Joe will Lead a Band of Angels with the same gentleness he portrayed during his life ! My Heart goes out to Sharon and all the kids...God Bless You All ~

I spent a huge part of my childhood at T&E Market, so got to know Joe very well. Long after T&E was gone, whenever our paths would cross around town, he was still the same kind and gentle guy that was so good to our family. He will always be remembered.

From our childhood on, those of us who shared Joe's generation were familiar with the phrase “A good Joe” as meaning “a really good guy'. We don't know if Joe heard this phrase as a child and helped mold him into the man he became, but he certainly became its' archetype. There was a genuineness about him that made him accessible to all who cared to interact with him, and we never met anyone who didn't want to do so. He was a man who will be missed and remembered by many.

Sharon And Family,
Words can't convey my feelings for you and your family in your loss of Joe. We are so sorry for our negligence and not keeping in touch. I have a lot of good memories of Joe. we drove to Sacramento, in Jan. 1951, to enlist in the Navy together, ( on a cold frosty morning in his circa 1939 Ford,) with no heater. We crossed paths somewhat in Dec. 1953, as his carrier was leaving and the carrier I was on was arriving in Japan. We got back in touch, when he participated in our wedding in 1956. We managed some visits
later as our families grew.

We moved to Lodi in 1968 just around the corner from T&E Market and it quickly became our favorite place to shop because of Joe. He was always so friendly and kind. If I saw him around town he would always say hello. Lodi lost one of the good guys. Sending heartfelt sympathies to the Metcalf family.
