Joel Canestrino Obituary

Joel passed away suddenly on April 21, 2013 leaving behind his "other half" – his twin brother, Shad Canestrino, his cherished children, his mother, all of Lodi, and a large extended family. Joel was born in Santa Cruz, CA and spent the majority of his childhood in San Jose, CA. He & his brother graduated together from Tokay High School in Lodi CA. He was an alumnus of UC Davis & shortly after receiving his degree, embarked on a career as a seed geneticist, most currently with Hazera Seeds Inc., specializing in the breeding & research of onion crops. At the date of his untimely passing, he was on track to become one of the premier breeders in his industry. His best friend & associate, Russ Brown of Visalia, CA & colleagues around the world, are dedicated to finishing the programs he initiated and toiled so tirelessly researching & personally planting in his quest to develop a better seed.
Joel had a passion and zest for science, nature, books, cooking & language that was exceeded only by his love for his three children – Claire, Ava and Owen Canestrino. They have always been the treasures of which he was most proud. They will greatly miss the dad who brought them Star donuts, loved family outings to Big 5 shoe sales, thought gold panning on the river was a better family sport than playing Wii, and taught them that saying you were bored meant you were really saying you wanted to clean onions for seeds. Joel's connection to the earth & soil began in childhood and his family often teased him that he owned more white tee shirts & khaki shorts than any other person on the planet… and he wore the marks from the fields on them proudly. They were well-earned.
His family; mother, Debra Canestrino Del Conte, brothers, Chris Canestrino of Stockton, & Shad (Sundey) Canestrino, grandmother, Grace Di Salvo of Red Bluff, CA, the Cassel family (Gary, Bonnie & Jen) and numerous aunts, uncles & cousins who loved him dearly, will miss his constant quips, his debate sparring, and most of all, his loving presence within his family. His nephew, Gage & niece, Camille Canestrino will miss their Uncle Joel… who teased them & made their dad laugh like no one else could. His loss will leave a void for all who loved him which can never be filled.
His father, Al Canestrino (Tina), of Madera, CA & grandparents, John Del Conte, Victoria Canestrino Piazza, & Shirley Gardiner Taylor precede him in death. A private family service will be held. Donations in his memory, if desired, should be made to the American Heart Association.

Joel, it's so hard to believe you have left us so soon. Since your passing, the memories have been flooding back to me. I remember holding you in my arms when you was born and being at every major event in your life - from childhood to adulthood -while watching you grow from a rambuctious child, to a loving son and brother - and finally to a mature, accomplished adult and amazing father. I take comfort knowing you are now in the arms and company of all the wonderful angels from our family who have passed before you. If there are debates in heaven, I'm sure you're leading the bunch! Only you could (or would) spar with the angels and hold your own. I was honored to be your aunt and am grateful for all the memories and times we shared. With heartfelt love and gratutude for having had you in my life. We were blessed to have you as long as we did. Your Aunt Diane.

Dear Shad and the entire family,

Your words could not be more true. We are never prepared for losing someone we love. It does indeed change the way we feel about what is important. Life will never be the same, yet we somehow move on and in doing that, find ways to honor our loved one. Joel holds a special place in the hearts of his entire family and we will all do our best to honor him and cherish the memories. With great sadness, Uncle Jon and Aunt Dorian

It's the onion's turn to cry.

To say we weren't prepared for this would be an understatement of gross proportion. There are no words to convey how much we miss him.
Some things that seemed important yesterday don't really seem to matter as much today. And "stuff" really doesn't seem to matter at all; I'd trade all the "stuff" for one more hour with him.
Support from family and fiends has been overwhelming and, frankly, very humbling. And for that, we thank you.

I am very sorry to hear that Joel has passed, I met Joel several years ago at Larson Elementary where our daughters went to school together, Joel was an interesting guy and seemed like he always had some good stories, usually about his work and where he had been traveling to,I can't believe all the places they would send him. I especially remember the time when Joel and I participated in the Valley Days program at Micke's Grove with our daughters and Joel was in charge of the gold panning and explaining to the kids how to find the gold. Even though Joel and I were not close friends we always shared a mutual respect for one another. and I don't remember a time that if he saw me somewhere at the school he would always take the time to say hello and shake my hand. Again, I am sorry for your loss. Sincerely, Bret Sackett
