MATTHEW BUTTERWORTH Obituary

Matthew MacKenzie Butterworth, 66, passed away peacefully at home on May 30, 2025, after a courageous 21-month battle with kidney cancer.
Matt graduated from Lodi High and Cal Poly, earning a B.S. in Agriculture. He and his wife, Barbara, first raised Thoroughbreds on their family ranch, then opened West 12 Ranch Studio.
A dedicated member of ILWU Local 54, Matt was known for operating cranes and bulldozers; colleagues affectionately called his contract readings "the gospel of Matt." A lifelong equestrian, he embraced life's adventures.
His deep Christian faith guided him; he was actively involved in his church, serving in the choir and the men's group "the Herd."
Matt is survived by his wife, Barbara; son, Joshua (Marla); daughter, Sarah; brother, Michael (Marta); stepmother Judy (Bill) and step-brother, Chris (Krista;).

So sorry to hear of Matt's passing; way too early. He was a good friend in high school. I didn't see him much lately, but when our paths did cross, he always had a huge smile and a hearty handshake.

I thought of Matt just this week when I read about the new train stop coming to Hwy 12 and the train tracks. It will ruin the Ranch's atmosphere and I felt sad for what he had built.

Rest in peace, buddy.
