Larry Bloom Obituary

Larry Wayne VanArsdol Bloom Larry Wayne VanArsdol Bloom, 72, died on Thursday, March 17, 2022, at Westmont Care Center in Logan, Iowa. He was born on December 24, 1949, to Wayne and Rosemary (Shadden) VanArsdol in Logan, Iowa. Wayne died when Larry was just two years old and after Rosemary married Donald Bloom, he and Gail were both adopted by Donald. He went to school in Woodbine and graduated in the class of 1968. Larry went on to further his education at the University of Iowa, where he graduated with a Political Science degree in 1975. He was also accepted into the University of Iowa Fiction Writers Workshop. Larry and Max McElwain took an epic journey across the United States, and he ended up in Seattle. He found work there as a janitor in the evenings so he could write during the day. He would save up money and take off to spend time with his family. He later moved to Iowa where he lived with Brian in Des Moines and then to Atlanta, Georgia to be with his mother. Bruce and Deb moved him to Omaha, Nebraska for a time and then he decided to move back to Woodbine. Larry was in a band in high school and also enjoyed playing basketball and being on the swim team. He wrote for the Woodbine Twiner and the Daily Iowan Newspaper at the University of Iowa. Most of all, Larry loved to spend time reading and writing. Larry is preceded in death by his father, Wayne VanArsdol; mother, Rosemary Bloom; father, Donald Bloom; infant sister, Teresa Rose VanArsdol; and brother, Gail Bloom. He is survived by his brothers, Bruce Bloom and his wife Debra of Elkhorn, Nebraska, Brian Bloom and his wife Jodi of Vernal, Utah and Barry Bloom and his wife Laura of Douglas, Georgia; and many other relatives and friends. A Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, March 23, 2022, at Fouts Funeral Home in Woodbine, Iowa. The recorded musical selections were "Turn, Turn, Turn" by the Byrds and "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. Honorary Pallbearers were Dave McElwain, Dave Raes, Marvin Allmon, Jeff Bloom, John Leonard and Dawn Melcher. Larry's final resting place will be the Woodbine Cemetery in Woodbine, Iowa.
