ANTHONY NAVARRA Obituary

Anthony Navarra, a 17 year resident of Rye, passed away on June 4, 2010. Born on July 18, 1913 to Mariannina & Antonio Navarra in Poggio Reale, Italy. He arrived in the US in 1914, spending his childhood in Auburn, NY, later moving to Brooklyn, NY around 1922. After graduating from Brooklyn College in 1935, later earning a Master's from Columbia University, he continued his studies at University of Perugia, Italy. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Brooklyn College in 2000 where he was recognized as a "brilliant poet, a lover of languages and a dedicated teacher with an unwavering commitment to his community." In 1974 he was chosen as one of the "Outstanding Elementary Teachers of America." He was also a guidance counselor and a teacher of English as a second language. He taught at Olinville Jr. H.S. in the Bronx, NY for 28 years. A published author of a book of poetry "Cobweb to a Star", in 1988, followed by a book of Haiku poems,"Whisperings on a Porch" in 1991. His poems have appeared in the Rye Record for many years. In 1945 he married Susan Scarano who predeceased him 1975. He is survived by Marie Adornato whom he married in 1986 at Sts. John's & Paul's in Larchmont, NY. Also survived by a son Anthony X. Navarra of Fishkill, NY, a daughter Cara Kamrowski of Yorktown Hts., NY, a stepson Greg Adornato and wife Lisa of Savannah, GA, a stepdaughter Lynn Lane and husband Sean of Woodland Hills, CA, and seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brothers Charles and Joseph. The family will receive friends at Graham Funeral Home on Sunday June 6 from 3 to 7 PM.
