August Fuchs Obituary

Fuchs, August E. "Bud"

August E. "Bud" Fuchs, Bardonia, NY, died on October 24, 2015. August was born on July 5, 1926 in Patchogue, NY to Grace Anne Colloton Fuchs (Apr 23, 1893-Nov 19, 1930) and Joseph Fuchs Mar 19, 1888-Jul 28, 1930). As an orphan at age 4, he was educated at St. Vincent de Paul's in Tarrytown NY run by the Marianite Sisters of the Holy Cross and went to Salesian High School in New Rochelle. The high school no longer boarded students so Bud lived with his sister Marjorie in Brooklyn and went to night school. He graduated in 1944 from Central Evening HS, Brooklyn NY. After graduation, he worked for the Brooklyn Navy Yard and then enlisted in the U.S. Army in World War II and became a corporal. After the war he worked for NY Central Railroad as a rate clerk, Stauffer Chemical Co. as assistant traffic manager, and at Mason & Dixon Tank Lines, a tanker trucking company, as a sales executive in Carterat NJ. In 1951, Bud married his late wife "Jeanette" Margaret McNicholas Fuchs (Sept 30, 1923-June 7, 2004). They had 3 children. Bud had two deceased daughters, Jane Fuchs Mutone (Feb 24, 1957-June 17, 1983) and Nancy Fuchs (born February 2, 1952-died April 3, 2011) and his surviving son, Robert Fuchs.

He is survived by her sister Helen Kelly of Brockport, NY and many nephews and nieces. He has always appreciated his friends and neighbors. When Bud retired he became interested in getting a part time job and doing something for the community. He became a School Crossing Guard for the Town of Clarkstown- Bardonia School. He loved being called "Officer Bud". He has said "…I like to mingle. I like to high five the kids and wave at every vehicle and bus that pass by... I always managed to keep the kids safe." He also worked with the Board of Elections during general, school and library elections. Bud has been a parishioner and an usher at St. Francis of Assisi since it was founded. He was always willing to help out at events and to get donations for a thrift shop. He enjoyed being part of the Senior Citizen group and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Coming from such a sparse childhood, Bud loved to collect things to give to a particular person. He enjoyed lending a person a table, a ladder, a skill saw to name a few items. When he gave away items- first on his list was Clare's Cove. After Bud got sick, he gave up being a Crossing Guard and working at the elections. He felt so lucky having so many caring family members, friends and neighbors. He appreciated the many dinners, the visits, being invited to join a get together.

The Fuchs family will receive friends and family October 27, 2015 between the hours of 2-4pm and 7-9pm at Higgins Funeral Home at 321 South Main St. New City, NY 10956. Mass will be on October 28, 2015 at 10:00am at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church at 128 Parrott Road West Nyack NY 10994. I was so sorry to learn of Bud's passing. I knew him as the crossing guard I passed each day on my way to work. I never knew Bud personally, but his smiling face and his wave hello warmed my heart. I always thought to myself, this is the kind of man our world needs more of. He seemed like a very kind and gentle soul who was honest, and committed to his family. I will miss his warm smile and wave. Rest in peace Bud and know that your presence in this world warmed even the hearts of those who knew you only by sight.

With sympathy,

Mr. Fuchs, our neighbor, was one of the kindest people I have ever known. As surely so many others do, I have fond memories from my youth in Bardonia of the profound decency of Mr. Fuchs, as well as that of Mrs. Fuchs. They were the charitable, reliable people that God wants us to be.

My family was so fortunate to have them as neighbors. They would always be there, as stand-in parents in an emergency, to regularly put forth small acts of kindness, and to be supportive friends.

Funny, even now, so many years later at his passing, simply saying "Mr. Fuchs" evokes the memory and spirit of a good man. May God bless you, Mr. Fuchs.
