Stritmater, Sr., August

August "Gus" Stritmater, Sr., passed away at the age of 98 on January 23, 2015 with his family around him. He was born in Yonkers, NY to the late Emil and Emma (Heck) Stritmater. He grew up in Haverstraw and attended Haverstraw High School where he was a member of their 1934 State Champion Football Team. Gus served in WWII as a Technical Sargent with the 76th Fighter Squadron (Flying Tigers) in the CBI Theater. He retired from Lederle Laboratories after 42 years of service. Gus was a 69 year member of the Sloatsburg Fire Department. He also served on the Village Zoning Board of Appeals for 5 decades with over 40 years as chairman.

Gus is survived Mary his wife of over 73 years, sons August Jr. (Leslie) and Robert (Catherine). He is pre-deceased by his son Joseph, grand daughter Kimberly Stritmater-Durkin, sister Frances Dombek and Brothers Emil Stritmater and Frank Stritmater. He leaves behind 8 grand children and 7 great grand children.

The family will receive visitors at the Scarr Funeral Home, 160 Orange Avenue, Suffern, NY on Tuesday, January 27th from 2:00PM to 4:00PM and 7:00PM to 9:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joan of Arc Church, in Sloatsburg at 10:00AM on Wednesday, January 28th In lieu of flowers, the family request that a donation be made in Gus's name, to The United Hospice of Rockland, 11 Stokum Lane, New City, NY 10956.

I am so sorry to hear of Gus's passing. You are in my thoughts and prayers, and my deepest sympathy to you and your family during this difficult time. I have wonderful memories of our visits to your house in Sloatsburg, and always enjoyed Gus's entertaining stories. I know he will be missed by many.
