Bert Shaw Obituary

Bert Shaw

Bert Shaw, 85, passed away peacefully at home holding hands with his wife on November 21, 2020, after a brief battle with cancer.

Born in Manhattan to the late Milton Shaw and Jesse Shaw, Bert grew up in Manhattan and the Bronx with his brothers Jay Shaw and the late Noel Shaw and his sister the late Harriet Shaw.

On Christmas Eve 1961 Bert married the love of his life Susan (Mencher) Shaw and they lived happily together for 59 years, first in the Bronx, then in Airmont, New York and then in Mahwah, New Jersey. Bert worked for decades at Beth Abraham Hospital and later at Rockland Community College where he made enduring friendships.

Bert was a devoted father to his son James Shaw, daughter Jodi (Shaw) Mehring, son-in-law Rick Mehring, son Adam Shaw and daughter-in-law Cheryl (White) Shaw. Bert was happiest doting on and spending time with his grandchildren, Alysa (Shaw) Evans and Danny Evans, Sydney Shaw, Stephen Shaw and Jesse Shaw.

Bert was a kind and gentle man who always left those around him with a smile. He enjoyed watching his teams the New York Mets, New York Giants and New York Rangers play and for years enjoyed the athletic and social rewards of softball, bowling, racquetball, tennis and pickle ball, through which he made life-long friends.

The family is holding a private service.
